Child-headed households are a harsh reality in South Africa. As we continue to welcome sibling groups to our care, we are grateful to watch older siblings transition out of care-giver and protector roles into the safety and security of family where they are able to just be children.

We want our children to know that they are brave. We want them to know that we see them, and celebrate the uniqueness they bring to the world and our families. We want them to know they are worth fighting for and so very loved.

At her request, one of our older teens is spending three months assisting our families in Cape Town. What a beautiful thing to watch young adults, who have grown up in Acres families, choosing to pour love into a new generation of children.

South Africa has the world's highest HIV/AIDS infection rate with over six million people affected. The number of teens dying from AIDS has tripled since 2000. Many of these teens were born with HIV at the height of the epidemic, before mother to child transmission was addressed. When we welcome children with HIV, we immediately place them on the very best ARV’s and empower them to understand that AIDS does not need to be a death sentence. ‪#‎worldaidsday‬

We love these t-shirts our girls are wearing and wish you could see the smiles that come when their worlds open up with sign language! We’ve welcomed multiple children with significant hearing loss and we’re thankful to send them to specialized schools that teach, empower, and ready them for success!

We’re grateful for the amazing adventures our older teens choose to experience. One of our girls, with us since 2001, leaves tonight for the US on a student visa. She will be living with a wonderful family who has invested in her life since she arrived at Acres of Love while she finishes high school in America. We are all feeling emotional- excited for this opportunity, and already recognizing how much she will be missed! We’re thankful for the global family that partners with us to raise our children with unconditional love and support!
