Just a little word about doing extra work. It pays very little, the shooting days/nights are usually long. But it can be very fun and rewarding regardless. In the early days of the 1980's, I did quite a few gigs as an extra, and have great memories, being a part of awesome films and TV shows. I got to work with many great actors, I have been bumped to featured roles and even speaking roles. The stand-in work with the second-unit stuff was especially fun. Doing extra work requires you to be a professional and adhere to all of the protocol of working on a set, regardless of the pay. If you conduct business as a professional, follow the rules, and understand your position as part of the production, it can be a great learning experience, and might have rewards that you do not expect. I still love watching TV shows and movies that I was a part of as an extra many moons ago. If you are doing extra work, try to enjoy being a part of the project, learn how the shooting processes work, and what everyone's job is on the set. Do not pay any attention to egos or anyone on the set who seems to "look down on" the extras, and just have fun! The rewards are there, just understand that you are there for a reason and are an important part of the scenes being shot. If you do a number of extra gigs, big studio sound stages, on-location at night, etc., you learn about how things are done. You will not learn that stuff in acting classes. When you finally land acting roles through your agent and the casting process, and you get a call time and location, you will know exactly what to do, who to check in with, wardrobe and makeup. The only difference is that instead of being directed to an extras holding area, you will have your own private dressing room, and will have to perform as an actor, with the other cast members. Of course there are rehearsals, table reads, etc. But you will be comfortable in the actual shooting environments. Extra work can be a profound learning experience, so take it seriously when you are working as an extra, and absorb as much as you can!

Are you an actor who is willing to make the "leap of faith"? Maybe move to Los Angeles and work hard, do the right things? Or are you one of those wishful thinkers who want to stay put and hope that opportunities come to you, instead of you driving hard towards success?
