Alam Ara, a love story between a prince and gypsy girl - the first sound talkie to be made and released in India on this day (14 March) in 1931, which introduced the idea of music and playback singing in Indian cinema. A fantasy set piece directed by Ardeshir Irani, the sound film was an adaptation of a Parsi theatre play written by Joseph David. It breathed new life in storytelling since the silent era mostly relied on mythology for scripts.

#Cinemawallah #INDIA #Cinema #TildaSwinton:-
http://cinemawallah.com/ Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton has underscored the inherent power of cinema as a ‘free state’ which enables filmmakers and viewers to be what they want to be regardless of gender, race or age.

Swinton was addressing a packed Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Auditorium kicking off the series of masterclasses for young filmmakers at the fourth edition of Qumra organised by Doha Film Institute (DFI). “I think the wonderful thing about art-cinema in particular-is that it is a free state, for us to be free of gender, nationhood, race or age. I think the glory of filmmaking is that we can all be whatever we want to be,” said Swinton at the two-hour long masterclass moderated Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Urging filmmakers to make cinema as free as possible, she said the best use of cinema as a free state is “to approach it with absolute carte blanche so that we don’t have to carry our own sense of identity into a frame.”

American independent cinema has always been a difficult concept to define. For the majority of people with a basic knowledge of American cinema, independent film making consists of low-budget projects made by mostly young filmmakers with a strong personal vision away from the influence and pressures of the few major conglomerates that control tightly the American Film Industry. They are provocative, unusual, autonomous, offbeat, arty, low-budget, and niche-oriented. Here is a list of independent films that departed from the dominant and the established Hollywood cinema in a large number of ways.
