Little Egret Dance
"It is going to be cold, you know."
"I know. But we have clothes. Stop whining."
"I know we do, but it is still going to be cold. Plus it is going to be dark."
"These things I know. Remember, you jumped in the car after you got out of bed. Plus, you've had a coffee. What is there to whine about?"
"Well. it's dark and cold. Plus, you forgot your beanie!"
"I did. Didn't I? But, I have a hoodie! Hoodies will work! So we are good!"
"I know. But..."
"Don't say it! Please for love all things cold and dark, don't say it!"
"Okay. But it is!"
"We're here! And it's dark!"
"I bet it's cold too!"
"I told you!"
"Seriously, it is like having a little voice nagging all the time. Nag. Nag! Wait. You are a little voice!"
So, that was the entertainment to the drive a couple of days ago to see what we would see. What we saw was a dark sky, so we made some astro images, a sunrise and we made some sunrise images and then we saw (and heard) the birds. Lots of birds. Feeding frenetically once the Sun started to light the sky up. It was cold (to be sure!) but we soon forgot all about it as we squatted down in the sand (which was cold - you ever felt sand so cold that as soon as your butt hits it, you begin to wonder whether you will ever have feeling in it again? That's a bit how it felt!) and watched what was going on in front of us.
First the Gulls came in and then the Pelicans. They fed like frenetic puppies who hadn't been fed in like 20 minutes (?!?!). It was crazy. Then, when things seemed to settle down, in came 12 Little Egrets. Like little jet fighters they came, landed, looked around, found the most likely target and then, just as Little Egrets do, fed even more frenetically than the Gulls and Pelicans.
This went on for about 15 minutes and then a couple decided to "dance!" Sort of. It is what they do at times like this. This is one of a series of images that show their "dance". It was awesome to watch. You know, as fast as they came in, they left just as quickly. "We" stood up when they left and shook our head. Nature...
