Be Natural original story of Alice Guy Blache by Alice Guy
Martin Scorsese inducts Alice Guy Blache into the DGA at the 75th D.

Martin Scoscese: "I´m very honored to be here tonight to present you the posthumous special directorial award for lifetime Achievement to Alice Guy Blache from 1896 to 1920. First in France and then, actually in Fort Lee, New Jersey, Alice Guy Blache, director, wrote, produced more than a thousand pictures of all kinds and She was a genuine pioneer. One of the first film makers, the very first woman from film makers and first woman to own and operate her own studio. She was also a Pioneer in the audio visual story telling along the side of the Melies Lumière brothers, Griffith of course and Chaplin.
She was born in Paris in 1873 and She entered the movie business in 1894 as a secretary and two years later She was head of production at Gaumount.
And now I call the great pioneers: Alice Guy Blache was certainly fearless and then She, if you look at the early films, then…and now I've had the pleasure in the past couple of weeks to see some of the earlier ones She had produced and acted, plus one wonderful film called ´Ocean Wave´…your'e beginning to realize that She was really trying everything; besides comedies, bored bill skits, all kinds of trick photography, double exposures, colored tinting, the early experiment with the synchronized sound using the Chronophone system , in witch the image was synchronized with these was cylinders. And in 1906 she directed the epic version of 'the life of Jesus', witch was actually an extraordinary visual achievement based on water colored ….cell?
In 1907 She moved to America and set her own production studio Solax Company. Doing these early years in the industry, Alice Guy Blache was a famous film personality too. In 1902 her pictures appeared in lots of movie magazines and news papers and She was frequently quoted into press about the place of woman in film production. ' oh, I have the right to be where I am', She said in a 1912 interview, 'and it´s a constant conflict when a woman intents to handle and supervise men in their work.
She cleared the path that was later walked by Lois Webber and Mabel Norman and of course the sounded Dorothy Arzner . Now, like Melies and D.W.Griffith, of course later making career in movie came to a sad end, taste changed, the center of production moved from here to over there, west…so She was forced to sell Solax and She made her last picture and I think it was called 'Tarnished Reputations', 1920. Alice Guy Blache returned to France 1922. And although she was made member of the Legion d'honneur She was more or less forgotten by the industry She had helped create. In fact, 30 years after She had gave up movie making, She tried to locate some of the principal role pictures and She couldn't find a single title. An industry like this, witch led to the formation of the film foundation, witch has helped restore and preserve over 500 films in the 20's + the years of existence half of that time working in partnership with the DGA, and the is so many more theta could be lost and then now you have to understand too that there is a very small percentage of silent cinema that has survived. And then for every title that has been preserved, there are over thousand others that have gone forever. And of a thousand titles that wore Alice Guy Balche's Name, only about 130 have survived. And it´s a tragedy, because She was more than just a talented business woman, She was a film maker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations. So it´s the whole bit intention of the DGA that by presenting this posthumous special directorial award for life time achievement to Alice Guy Blache. The guilt abroad can raise awareness of the exceptional film director and bring greater recognition to the role of women in film industry. And lets take a look at one of cinemas greatest pioneers Alice Guy Blache
