"Just beyond a field and up a rocky rise awaits adventure."

My favorite line from a Gary Gygax written adventure module.

Death, in FATE, is really not an issue. As written, no player character ever has to die because they can always concede a fight. Ever major deathblows, can be taken as a character changing extreme consequence. I consider this to be great for ongoing campaigns.

However, for a one shot adventure where you want that Old School RPG tension, with death on the line... I mean, look, Tomb of Horrors in FATE would be a cake walk. It's designed to work by threatening to kill the characters. Period. Almost all of the original OSR adventures were about avoiding a character destroying bad choice or bad roll. Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (EBP) is DnD's original Viet Nam for the characters! It even states in the introduction the point of it is challenge players who think they are good to actually survive the damn thing!

So, when I thought about special rules for FATE when running my highly re-written version of EBP, I wanted to keep the changes to a minimum. So I selected key scenes that were providential to the entire experience. For those scenes I declared a new aspect: DEATH IS ON THE LINE. It revokes permission to concede the fight (or retreat in any way), as well as preventing a character from taking an Extreme consequence.

Once the scene is over, the aspect goes away. Fighting vegepygmy mooks, even the whole village of them? Not a problem, go nuts. Deciding to take on the Froghemoth? Now that is a different story. Death is on the line, and that nasty beast is no joke! OSR also means Oh Shit, Run!

This is great! I am re-writing and re-imagining Expedition to the Barrier Peaks and part of what I need to figure out is how to recreate the Mind Flayer in that adventure. Thanks for this, it will really help.

You are part of a military expedition into the Arctic. Your mission is to discover the origin of a signal discovered at the icy depths of the ocean floor that locals have described as scaring off all wildlife. You suspect your government knows more than they are telling you.

Is anyone using Modes (as described in Atomic Robo: http://fate-srd.com/atomic-robo/modes)? If so, what do they add to your game? To me they seem very complicated and don't add anything I don't already get from aspects. What am I missing?

Got Mindjammer from the mailbox this morning. Brought it into work... that is one sweet product. I am really glad I contributed to the kickstarter. It is fantastic!

Has anyone here tried Fate (Core or Accelerated) with http://www.fantasygrounds.com/? It looks interesting. I'd like to get some real world feedback from anyone who has used it with Fate.
