Great song!! In my opinion I think the video it's very symbolic…. the kid at the beginning of the video singing "Dear God, hope you get the letter and I pray you can make it better down here..." means that most of the kids, has been told by their parents, or adult people that god exists and that god is good, the typical early teachings about religion, but the kid can notice the injustice in the world, and has a lot of questions about it, and as he has been told to believe in god, he asks him what's going on about all this injustices…when the camera goes from top down form the kid, means the growth of the kid in to an adult, when the kid set his foot on the camera it’s a symbolic reject of the beliefs and god, when he takes it away and then the singer appears, it’s the kid as an adult, and the lyrics goes on, with criticizing faith and religious beliefs, more strongly, affirming that he can’t and don’t believe in god because as an adult he has formed his own criteria, and has realized that all is bullshit.
I think the tree symbolizes the religions, the people on the tree are the believers, well, Can you cut down a tree with hammers? The hammers are like the song, and his opinions about religion, you can only disturb a few believers, or make a few of them to open their eyes…clearly there’s not much you can do against this big and well organized monster called religion….but he knew that his song was going to cause polemic…and at the end of the video when there’s a kid again, I think he’s trying to say that we need to break the cycle, and stop teaching this religious bullshit to the future generations of children… that’s my personal interpretation…xD
