The American College of Physicians released new guidelines this week on chronic low back pain. They recommended that non-drug therapies be utilized first, such as chiropractic, since medication often performs equally to placebo for back pain.

“Physicians should consider opioids as a last option for treatment and only in patients who have failed other therapies, as they are associated with substantial harms, including the risk of addiction or accidental overdose,” said Dr. Damle. Chiropractic is an excellent choice for acute and chronic back pain. Chiropractors are trained to evaluate the cause of pain, and often can do a more thorough musculoskeletal evaluation than medical doctors since we work exclusively with the muscles and joints.

Here is a really interesting article on a study showing that the makeup of your mouth's bacteria colony can affect whether you have migraines or not.

Apparently, the nitrates produced by the bacteria, in the presence of certain foods, can trigger migraines. It's a very early study, so no conclusions can be drawn, but it is always exciting to see the interplay between our bodies and our bacterial population.

See http://www.french-chiropractic.com/headache for more on migraines.
