So this is interesting... I was browsing Google trends for information on search behaviour during the debates, like you do...

Because I couldn't narrow it down to JUST the debates, I used the past 24 hours as a proxy, and the debates clearly stood out. If you dig into the results, they get a bit... interesting.

Of course the television personality with a history of generating media coverage had a decent showing, but his peaks weren't really better than anyone else. What's interesting is that his activity remained consistently high throughout the day.

It gets weirder... for EVERY OTHER CANDIDATE I looked at, the regional map (darkest color equals peak search volume) is pretty consistent, spread across the country. Not for Trump. If you look in list view, most candidates had one highest volume region, but plenty others within 10-20 points, meaning that the interest in them was broadly shared. This is what you'd expect for a nationally televised debate.

Trump is different: ONE metro region is more than DOUBLE every other in peak search volume - Beaumont, Texas.
Why Beaumont?
Because Trump's next rally will be held there on Saturday. And then you realize that this really means Trump's staff has relocated there for the planning of the rally. Trump has already shown he's not above bribing people to show up in order to keep up appearances. This anomaly looks like the same thing might be happening with debate searches in order to make Trump appear to have a better performance than he really did. Look at the unnaturally high search volume taking place IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. If that's not a sign of spam searching, I don't know WHAT is...

If you filter out Beaumont searchers, who are either his own campaigners or local interest in the rally (and since when do ONLY locals show up for a statewide rally?) then Trump clearly lost the debate according to search volume.
