Went there to celebrate my birthday and it was fantastic. They bent over backwards to accommodate my group's food preferences, including pescatarian and nut allergies. Instead of lamb, they brought out beautiful fish for the main course for two in my party. The pasta course was fabulous, and I'm picky being part Italian. They also provided a wonderful birthday dessert, even though we had not informed them beforehand. The service was perfect, the decor like being in a Craftsman-style jewel box.

Amazing environment with excellent food. The decor is beautiful with solid wood and you have an open view of the kitchen. The food is very very good. Reservations are a must and expect about a $100 per person (not including the wine).

A miss, I'm afraid. We called ahead to notify the restaurant that we would have a vegetarian diner in our group. The establishment readily advanced that they would be pleased to accommodate the menu restrictions and advised that the chef would substitute an appropriate item. Upon service, 3 of our party were served with the day's entrée; the vegetarian diner was similarly served, but with a large empty space on the plate where the entrée should have appeared.....no substitution, just the non-meat sides. Upon gentle inquiry, the waiter removed the vegetarian dish, returning to the table with increased portions of the sides for the vegetarian diner. No explanation or non-meat substitution offered. To add to the dining experience, our pork entrees were served on the (very) rare side.....when asked to return the food to the kitchen to have cooked through, the waiter took exception, but ultimately complied with the request. In all, a less than satisfactory dining experience.....certainly not what would have been expected from such a storied establishment.

Ok, so I haven't been here in years and when I wanted to go again last year or the year before, it was closed after a fire (now re-opened). But this is the only place I have ever eaten where I literally stopped talking for several minutes just so I could savor the amazing taste in my mouth. I have eaten at some seriously good multi-Michelin-starred restaurants, but I have never been silenced anywhere but here. What I remember most were the most unassuming looking pork medallions I'd ever seen (boring looking, actually, no garnish), but wow... just amazing. FYI: The silent meal was at the Chez Panisse Restaurant. Their Cafe is also very good, but I can keep talking through my meals there. :)

* Mediocre and pricy restaurant. Clearly overrated. * We ordered smoked black cod and clam chowder. Instead, they replaced the cod by shrimps without letting us know. Mediocre. * The white wine was warm. * Service correct.

We had an early reservation at the Cafe, since we had just arrived in CA. The restaurant is in a house on the Berkeley gourmet ghetto. The cafe is up some rather steep stairs. The service was good, with only a minor delay regarding a drink order. The menu is limited, but has fresh seasonal ingredients prepared in interesting ways. There is also a price fixe menu each day. The wine menu had some good selections, and a fair number of by the glass selections. The food was delicious, from the salad courses to the fish stew. The desserts were fairly simple compared to the elegance of the entrees. A must-stop for any serious gourmand.

My party was not their usual clientele, however we were all dolled up and we're very excited to enjoy a nice meal. I had heard nothing but amazing things. My experience was awful. Our waitstaff would go whisper to his peers point with his hands toward our table and they would all stand there staring and laughing. When we finished a bottle of wine the waiter looked at it and gave us judging looks. I am sorry but for a $600 dollar meal, I expect to be treated with respect and this was NOT the case at all. 4 out of the 6 people in our party are current or previous industry workers and we could not believe that this is how they serve their clients. I will not return, I will tell everyone I know not go to and the manager will be receiving a letter about my experience.

Simply superlative cuisine. I've come here for lunch with my wife a couple of times. You can taste how much talent goes in the preparation of every plate - the dishes are brilliant without being over fussy, and are often in fact quite simple. This is a temple of global gastronomy that has influenced countless chefs - definitely worth a pilgrimage.
