There have been residents in Paddock Wood who have gained a respectable reputation beyond its borders. Philip Martin Brown, an actor who has appeared in numerous TV shows and had parts in films, is a resident. Sammy Rimmington, a jazz musician, is another famous resident. He was born in Paddock Wood in 1942. Two British Army officers also lived in the vicinity - Frederick E Morgan, who died in 1967 and John Brunt (pictured) , who died in 1944 - he was a VC winner. Captain Brunt was a brave soldier known for being in the thick of fighting whenever in conflict with the enemy. He was in Italy, twice decorated for bravery and killed by mortar fire. Yet there are a number of stories about his feats such as climbing on top of a German tank and directing the drive while firing a gun. His family moved to Paddock Wood in 1934 and 'Young John', as he was called, helped to train the local Home Guard. He also helped with the local hop harvest.
