This is from a one-day trip D and I took a few weeks ago. The park was surprisingly empty. We had the John Muir trail to ourselves.

Oakland Police Beat and Oakland Local are offering two investigative journalism internships for the spring 2013 semester. Interns will help research and report real-world, in-depth investigative stories. They will learn the fundamentals of data journalism, public records and courts reporting, as well as report and write their own stories.

Applicants must be passionate about public interest journalism and finding behind-the-scenes stories in a city with one of the highest per-capita violent crime rates in the country and a police department that narrowly avoided a federal take over. Applicants must have a basic understanding of Excel or Google Doc spreadsheets. Multimedia skills - photography, videography, data visualization -- are a bonus. Internships are 5 months long and 12-15 hours a week.

Email applications to Oakland Police Beat editor Abraham Hyatt, abraham@oaklandlocal.com. When you apply, please tell us your favorite example of an investigative story from anywhere in the world in 2012 and describe why you like it.

"I am forever urging my students to mark up their books, to scribble, deface and decode.  It's only by interacting with the books we admire at the sentence level that writers can begin to unlock the secrets of how one's heroes have accomplished their magic"

"Only in the last few decades has a mathematics of roughness emerged, one that can get a grip on self-similarity and kindred matters like turbulence, noise, clustering, and chaos. [...] In the late 1970s Mandelbrot became famous for popularizing the idea of self-similarity. What is perhaps less well known about Mandelbrot is the subversive work he did in economics. The financial models he created, based on his fractal ideas, implied that stock and currency markets were far riskier than the reigning consensus in business schools and investment banks supposed, and that wild gyrations—like the 777-point plunge in the Dow on September 29, 2008—were inevitable."

Trying out the new big image post format with a photo of Hirz Mountain Fire Lookout. Not a bad place to spend a weekend.

It's hard to tell its quality with just one photo, but if you download the image it gives you a lower resolution version with a file size that's larger than it needs to be (80kb). What was the file size you uploaded? I assume you uploaded a higher resolution photo and Google+ compressed it right? As far as I can tell Facebook is still way ahead of everybody else in terms of higher image compression quality, much smaller file size too. But like I said hard to tell yet... I'm gonna go experiment...
