You do make a couple of good points and I would be concerned about them.  However i'm just doing it for fun, the moment it becomes to much work I stop, because then its not fun.

I just finished reading Squirting Milk at Chameleons by Simon Fenton, an Englishman who married an African woman in Senegal, popped out a few kids, and built a house/retreat centre. It's a great peek into life and culture in Africa....highly recommended!
