Pest Control Tips - Keep The Varments Away

The other night, I was at a friend’s house in Richmond, BC. He asked me to check out his garden shed for any damage from pests and to see if it needed any kind of preventive maintenance work to stop any intruders.
He recently moved into his new home and he wanted to ask me to check out his garden shed to prevent any squirrels, rat, mice and racoons making their way inside. He was going to call a pest control company but I thought I would take a look at his shed for him.
I went along the side of the shed and looked up at the roof and the corner post as well as the rafters. You can see all these squirrel damage up in there. There is all kinds of recent wear, fresh wood and chewed marks.
There has been old area of chewing but has been stained before over the years. Also it looks like they have put some chicken wire up in the rafters to prevent any squirrels, rats and mice getting into the shed.
You can see that the corner where all the pests have tried to get in, but under the roofing they put some chicken wire up in there for some pest control. If you look behind the chicken wire it looks like they might have put a 2 by 4 for extra prevention.
It looks like the old siding from the side of the shed, and then there’s a 2 by 4 and then there is this chicken wire. Maybe they put the chicken wire on first. It didn’t work properly and the animals still got in, so maybe they put these 2 by 4 pieces in there the second time.
This is a very good idea if you want to keep the critters out of your garden shed, but this is not a do it your selfer. I guess you could do it yourself but it is quite technical and requires some skills.
You might want to give your local pest control company a call. This is not a job for everyone so you might want to give them a call. This is a hard job and you want to do it eight.
Your local pest control company might suggest on what you should do and what actions you need to do to prevent any critters getting into your garden shed.
Looking at my friend’s garden shed everything looks fine. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere for any rodents and pests can get in. The previous owner seal things up good and tight.

Garage Door Preventive Maintenance Tips

Scott here from everydayhandyman.com. I thought I would share a couple tips with you. For the last several months our garage door has started to make a lot of squeaking noises, so I decided to lube all the joints and the bearings and the connections, and try that out which worked out good.
There is three different styles of hinges and rollers on this door and here’s one of them. What I did was I just sprayed some, what’s called ‘Move it’. It’s a penetrating lubricating oil in here.
You can use WD-40 or any kind of stuff like that. I’m not a big fan of WD-40. It seems to evaporate quickly. So this stuff is a thicker liquid. You just spray it in the joints.
Here’s another type of bearing. So what I did was I just sprayed the penetrating oil right in here and right down in here and along this little shaft here. Then the same on this side in here, the best you can, and then around here. This is the roller bearing, so this is what’s got some ball bearings in there. So I sprayed some in there as well.
Here’s the other kind of bearing. So I used the same stuff and sprayed in here, sprayed in here, and sprayed in there and all around the black roller bearing. What I did after that, I opened up the door several times and then it still made a little bit of a squeaking sound, so I gave the hinges and rollers another spray and then the sound went away.
This is the stuff I used. It’s called ‘Moovit.’ I know there’s lots of different kinds out there likeWD-40 works, but I don’t really like that. It seems to evaporate quickly, so I just use this stuff and it’s worked over the years. But, if you’ve got some WD-40 around, there’s no reason why you can’t use that.
I hope this video helped. Be sure to subscribe to our Youtube channel and have a nice day and we’ll talk to you next time. One more thing, here’s the tools I used. There wasn’t very many, but I definitely had some shop towels or used some shop towels because this is a thick liquid so you want to wipe it off the door after you spray it. I also used this half-inch wrench, or 13mm wrench to tighten the bolts on the hinges that attach the hinges to the door.
This is something you might want to think about. This is called a bit of preventive maintenance, even though it had started to squeak, it’s a good idea to do this at least once or twice a year. But it’s also (if you don’t really know what you’re doing) a good idea to call a garage door expert, who services garage doors, to come in and give you a hand. There is a few heavy-duty springs and things like that so this is something you should get some professional help with.
I hope this video helped and be sure to subscribe, if you find this stuff helpful.

Total Snow Ladner BC Canada Feb 24 2014

I’m sure you have heard crazy weather before all over the world including the latest Vancouver BC’s crazy snowfall. The latest snowfall measured from my balcony in Ladner BC, which is 30 minutes south of Vancouver to be just over 7 ½ inches or near 19 cm. With all the crazy weather worldwide it is hard not to hear about it. Not only was the snowfall crazy in Vancouver but all over the province of British Columbia and I am sure many other places.
Usually when it starts to snow on the West Coast shortly after the snow changes to rain and starts to melt and wash away. Not so this time, the snowfall started late afternoon on Saturday and finished mid-evening on Monday night. After snowing for nearly 48 hours the  total was near 7 1/2 inches or near 19+ cm.
I’m not sure if you can credit this to global warming or climate change but definitely the seasons are changing. For the longest time the weather was dry and fairly mild but now the winter season on the West Coast seems to be later and later every year. Spring is soon to be here and now it starts to snow. After the snowfall now the weather is clear and sunny, fairly mild like a spring day.
The scary thing with all global leaders pushing resource-based economies you would think global warming is only going to continue and not go away anytime soon. I’m not sure if these politicians are seeing the big picture (I think they do but it is about money to them and not the planet) but continuing to burn fossil fuels is only going to increase global warming. The amount of carbon injected into the atmosphere is only going to increase with the burning of fossil fuels so who knows what the future is going to look like.
Every time you watch the weather it seems like the severity of the world whether is only increasing. The more fossil fuels that are burned the more pollution that gets injected into the atmosphere the better chance of increased severity of these storms.
Another scary thing is there doesn’t seem to be much government support for alternative green energy. There might be but you don’t hear very often in the news it’s all about pipelines, resources and creating jobs.
I understand the creating jobs thing but I also understand there are alternatives. Governments these days seemed to be one so one-sided. Burn, mine and refine these fossil fuels creating more pollution in the atmosphere.
There should be a balance. You can use these fossil fuels as energy for today’s needs but slowly over time provide alternatives like solar power, geothermal, wind power and electricity etc.
In my opinion I guess it all boils down to big money. There is big money to be made in a resource-based economy but the sacrifices to the world are huge. It creates a lot of jobs out of the sacrifices of the world and our kids kids. It takes a few years to destroy it and millions of years to recover.
Feel free to leave any comments below. Would love to hear your thoughts about renewable energies, fossil fuels, environment and the attitudes of the government’s resource base economy.
