Disciplinary Investigations
Sometimes we need to undertake these as part of managing our staff. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to do a good job, just a good framework to work within.

There is a checklist here which will ensure you do this effectively and don't forget anything.

Shared Parental Leave - get ready!
Employers need to get ready for the new Shared Parental Leave regulations coming into force on 1st December 2014.

This is a statutory right available to employees who have a new baby or a newly adopted child on or after 5th April 2015. It gives them the option of sharing up to 50 weeks of leave and 39 weeks of pay if they meet the necessary eligibility criteria. The parents can decide to be off work at the same time and/or take it in turns to have periods of leave to look after the child.

This could potentially be a fairly big headache for small businesses who have to administer the scheme and who could lose employees who are fathers or partners for long spells of shared parental leave.

Personally I don't think the uptake will be great. However best to be prepared so we have developed a policy template available on our website for free download.

5 Books That Will Change How You Think

I read a lot and not many books make much of an impression on me to be honest. However the 5 which have fundamentally changed the way I think about the world are:

1. Thinking, Fast and Slow - Daniel Kahneman
This will change how you think about the way we make decisions and choices for ever!

2. Outliers: The Story of Success - Malcolm Gladwell
Looks at why some people are able to achieve so much more than others - what makes them special - it might surprise you!

3. The 80/20 Principle: The Secret of Achieving More with Less - Richard Koch
The 80/20 Principle demonstrates how you can achieve much more with much less effort, time and resources, simply by concentrating on that all-important 20%

4. The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli
How to gain and retain absolute power. You can see the principles at work every day in politics, organisations, committees etc. Once you understand what is going on, the action of politicians etc. become a whole lot clearer!

5. Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets - Nassim Nicholas Taleb
How talented are the great leaders in business and society? How much is their performance down to chance rather than skill? This book looks in a new way at how we perceive random events as having meaning.

Read these books and you will never perceive the world in the same way again!

Do you have any recommendations for me?

Shared parental leave and pay
UK employers should be aware that these new regulations come into force on 1st December 2014 so you can expect requests early in 2015 where a baby is due to be born on or after 5 April 2015.

Parents who meet the eligibility criteria will be able to share a pot of parental leave (52 weeks), and can decide to be off work at the same time and/or taking it in turns to have periods of leave to look after the child.

There will be a significant admin overhead to these new arrangements and it would be advisable for employers to have a clear policy on this. There is some ACAS guidance currently available on this, but more detailed guidance is still awaited.
