If anyone in the Houston area is interested in getting involved with the Green Party, there are Precinct meetings tomorrow, Tuesday at 7:00 pm, 2805 Wichita St, Houston, TX 77004. Please come!

I hope that you have been following the Michael Berry story. It just gets more interesting each day.

For those who are just getting into it, here is a little background. Michael Berry was a local right wing politician. He was on City Council, but decided to leave politics after an unsuccessful bid to become the Mayor of Houston.

Then he found a new hat as a slumlord. He found it quite profitable to buy rundown apartments. Then he would fill them with illegal immigrants, homeless, prostitutes, drug dealers. It didn't matter whether they could pay their rent, he just wanted to get the occupancy rates up. Then he would turn around and sell these same apartments with their artificially inflated occupancy at a sizable profit.

It was about this time that he became a Rush Limbaugh wannabe on talk radio. He spewed the typical right wing venom. For instance in reference to the proposed mosque at Ground Zero, he remarked, "And I’ll tell you this, if you do build a mosque, I hope somebody blows it up," He also trashed Annise Parker for being a lesbian when she was running for the position of Mayor. With remarks like this he became the darling boy of the right wing talk radio crowd.

Well so much for the background, here is what transpired. On the evening of January 31st,he was at a local Houston gay nightclub called TC's. This is famous for its "drag" shows. Upon leaving, he backed into a car.
Fender benders like this happen. All he had to do was just exchange insurance information and the matter would have been finished. Instead he left.

Bad decision!

This then became a hit and run, which for this type of accident is a misdemeanor. They have his car description, licenses plate number, security video of him in the nightclub, as well as eye witness accounts that he was driving the car. There is no way he could talk his way out of this one.

But he has friends in the right places. Therefore the prosecutor's office presented minimal evidence to the grand jury. Not surprisingly, when presented with such skimpy evidence, the grand jury said that there was not enough evidence to charge him. Yet we are not talking about some Joe Blow here (Maybe we are, you would have to ask the other patrons of TC's about that.) Anyway, the media picked up on the story and told things that were not presented to the grand jury. This caused the authorities to reopen the investigation.

So that is how things stand. Each day something new comes out.

Very interesting..................

Two nights ago, Chandra and I were at a dance program that was given by a friend of ours. While I was there, a number of people talked to me about my candidacy. One person quite innocently inquired as to why I was running under the Green Party and not under the Democratic or Republican party. I wish that I were eloquent enough to give him a good single-sentence answer. Unfortunately I wasn't.
But the reason is really simple. The problems of this country are structural, not partisan. If we ignore the rhetoric of the two parties, and look at voting records, we find that there is almost no substantial difference between them. Furthermore, if we look at the corrupt system of PACs and the peddling of political influence, there is not one iota of difference.
The two parties have created facade of democracy. This facade is there to hide their own criminality. We can switch party allegiances forever and never attain the needed reforms. Therefore any meaningful reform must come from outside the present system. That is why I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican.

Xenophobia is defined as "an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange." This has historically been considered to be psychopathology. But in the last12 years this has been converted from a mental condition to the foundation for our foreign and domestic policy. I think that it is time to return to sanity.

We set up the campaign bank account a couple of days ago. We can now legally accept donations. If anyone wishes to make a donation, cheques can be made to "David R. Courtney, Campaign Account." However I will only accept money from human beings. No "entities". That means no PACs, no non profit-organizations, no churches, LLCs,unions, or corporations.
Some of these "entities" are already barred from making campaign donations. That is good. If "entities" cannot vote, they have no business in the political process. But I think that we should bar all "entities," especially PACs from the political process. It is time to bring politics back to the people!

I thought of getting a gun rack for my vehicle. But then I couldn't figure outhow one attached these things to a bicycle.

It has always baffled me why so many people do not understand the nature and relationship between public and private sector. Sometimes I am talking with people who are of the "Fox News" mentality, and they are going on about "all these lazy people on welfare." I quietly ask them if they didn't think it would be better simply to give them all a bucket and a brush and have them cleaning lamp-posts in exchange for payment. Invariably the say, "Yes, that is a much better idea!"

This is what the public sector is.

The job of the private sector is to efficiently make widgets. The job of the public sector is to make healthy societies. We will always need both!

For over a century, the American oligarchy has used American military and foreign policy to pursue their interests. These were generally contrary to the well being of the American people, and certainly harmful to to the people in the countries where “American interests” were concerned. But the American oligarchy was smart enough to realize that there would be no significant domestic opposition as long as the American people could be fed “crumbs from their table.”

However,in the last few decades, these “crumbs” have not been forthcoming. The American people have started to suffer the same abuse that people around the world have felt for a very long time This is not wise, because the people of this country will not take this indefinitely. The American people are starting to question why they should suffer these insensitive plutocrats. Perhaps it is time to try democracy?

I'm just reflecting upon the high point of my week. I most enjoyed my 30 mile bicycle trip around Houston last Thursday.
