Did you know? Venice counts 417 bridges out of which 72 are Private. Originally all Bridges had no railings and no steps because until 1500 people could circulate with horses. There are now only 2 left, one in Torcello (in the picture, called the Devil's Bridge) and one near the Fondamenta della Misericordia. Careful....not too many Spritz before you cross them!!!

Did you know? The word "Ciao" originates in Venice!
In the Antique times people used to salute with the words "s-ciavo vostro" which means "your servant, to your orders, your slave". With time the word became first "s-ciao" and then "ciao". We do learn something every day!!!!
A good guide in Venice can teach you this and plenty more amazing anecdotes! http://ow.ly/i/50TM7

In this season Mantis Shrimps produce eggs which are not bad but certainly much less delicate in flavour or taste then the meat. In order to recognise the ones which have the roe, turn them around and if you see the 3 white lines, leave them behind.
Once poached and simply seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper Mantis Shrimps are the perfect starter. Learn more with me with a Cooking Class or by purchasing my "Book Venice on a Plate...but what a Plate! " on Amazon or selected Book Stores http://ow.ly/i/4XGV0

Cape Town is known for it's Seafood and especially for it's Cape Crayfish. When in 1990 I moved there Crayfish used to cost in today's money €1.80 a Kg.... You can just imagine the feast I had! Now they are much more expensive but amazingly tasty. They live in shallow waters and you can buy a permit that will allow you to catch 5 a day. Ask Emma to prepare you a Braai (the local word for a BBQ) of Crayfish, to teach you how to make a home made Mayonnaise and enjoy the view from our amazing terrace! Price will be higher than a normal class but still worth it!!!

This morning my Vegetable Monger told me that in a couple of weeks we should get the first Castraure (the first tender artichoke the plant produces in Spring) from Sant'Erasmo, the island that used to be Venice's Vegetable Garden. A salad of "Castraure" from the Lagoon is one of the best reasons to come to Venice!!! http://ow.ly/i/4XN9g

In the old times wealthy Venetian merchants had a Gondola and a Gondolier outside their Palazzos instead of a car and driver. We can help you live the same experience!!!
