How I found the courage to start singing, and to keep at it, despite sounding pretty bad initially...

I was a bit shocked -- in a good way -- by Ted Panken's liner notes for my upcoming record from Jazzed Media (1/19/18), "I Get A Kick: Cole Porter Reimagined." Here they are.

“Great pipes… talented songwriter.” – Jazziz

“A singer, spoken-word artist and poet with an incisive way of chronicling situations, memories, and emotions… a pliable, expressive voice dipped in blue… saucily suggestive… imagistic…” – Jazz Times

“…Whatever she knows or sings comes, in Whitman’s term, from the body electric.” – Frances Mayes, author, in San Jose Mercury

Lisa B has released 5 CDs to widespread radio play and charting and excellent reviews. She has performed music and poetry at more than 80 clubs, performance spaces, colleges, and bookstores. She also has two poetry books (a full-length book from Wesleyan University Press and a chapbook from Five Fingers Poetry) to her credit.

Billy Philadelphia has played many of the pianos in the Bay Area in the past 40 years, led bands of all kinds in numerous Bay Area clubs, cabarets and hotels, and played with Chuck Berry, Commander Cody, Asleep at the Wheel, and Dame Edna. He starred as songwriter/actor Hoagy Carmichael in "Hoagy" and recorded the CD "Hoagy and Me."

Thanks to John Coltrane on your birthday. May your music continue to inspire us always!

"Trane's Ride" is a poem I composed in the imagined voice of the great saxophone player and composer John Coltrane (as indicated at the start of the recording when I say, "I heard Trane say..." The "Him" referred to later in the poem is God. Some reviewers have misunderstood this as a reference to Coltrane).

I have listened to John Coltrane's music in utero (my father was a big fan and then a friend) and ever since. The power, depth, and beauty of his music, the intensity of his unique voice in continual struggle, yearning, and discovery, have truly helped shape me as a person and an artist.....(see post for more)
