Hi guys - checking why posts by Square Kilometre Array don't appear anymore on the page. We recently advertised 3 postdoc positions to the community in the Job Ads section as we'd like to get the word out as far as possible to recruit the best for the jobs., however I can't see those and other recent posts. Has the SKA account been blocked? If so please explain why and how we can post. Otherwise, is it okay to post the jobs or relevant news from my personal account (following the guidelines as always). Thanks for your feedback and help.

Hi everyone! Here's a free cultural thing to do for those who are in or visiting Manchester in August. The SKA (big international science project based at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire and supported by the UK Government) has developed an art exhibition on the theme of the night sky with works of art by Indigenous artists from South Africa and Australia. It's been previously shown there and is now on display in Manchester for a limited time (and it's free to visit!). I've been very lucky to play a (small) part in it and can only recommend it, the pieces are beautiful :). Cheers!

This is the amazing place where I work! A gorgeous building :)
The SKA Organisation headquarters, located near to, and with views of the iconic Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory, near Manchester, UK, is the central control hub for a global team who is supervising the design of the SKA – The largest radio telescope ever seen on Earth.

The elegant and modern building, funded by the University of Manchester, is a state of the art facility which will eventually be home to upwards of 60 members of staff, including visiting scientists and engineers.

Designed by architects Fielden Clegg Bradley and built by John Turner Construction Group, the building uses numerous environmentally friendly engineering solutions by Capita Symonds to ensure a minimal environmental impact. Natural lighting is provided by the huge glass facade, and the architectural teams have made important efforts to ensure that the ventilation, lighting and heating systems are as energy efficient as possible. Built in just over 6 months, the SKA Organisation office has been in use since November 2012. #SKAtelescope   #jodrellbank   #architecturephotography    #astronomy

SKA: SQUARE KILOMETRE ARRAY 
Exploring the Universe with the world's largest radio telescope 

In the 20th century, we discovered our place in the Universe. Our telescopes have revealed an expanding Universe with billions of galaxies, each filled with stars of all sizes and temperatures, along with black holes, neutron stars, planets and gas clouds.

In the 21st century, we now seek to understand the complete evolution of our Universe and its constituents. To address this fundamental questions, a new generation of astronomical facilities is needed with a revolutionary  new radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), playing a crucial role. The SKA will be built in Australia and Southern Africa and will comprise thousands of linked radio wave receptors. Recent innovative technological developments in both computing  and radio frequency devices have made it possible and affordable for the SKA to be built by 2024. With an unprecedented large radio wave collecting area, the SKA will be 50 times more sensitive, and be able to survey the sky 10 000 times faster than any imaging radio telescope array  previously built. By observing a large volume of the Universe, over much of cosmic time, the SKA will answer many more that we do not yet know to ask.

The SKA represents a revolution in Astronomy

The SKA will provide about a million square metres of collecting area. This huge increase in scale comparing to existing telescope demands a rivolutionary break from traditional radio telescopes design.
Three antenna types dishes, mid frequency aperture arrays and low  frequency aperture arrays, will be used to provide continuous frequency coverage from 70 MHz to 10 GHz.

To achieve both high sensitivity and high risolution images of the sky,  the antennas will be densely distributed in the central regions and then positioned in clusters along spiral arms becoming more widely spaced further away from the centre.

Combining the signals from the antennas will create a telescope with a collecting area equivalent to a dish with an area about one square kilometre.

Radio Astronomy produced some of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century, including the cosmic microwave background, pulsars and gravitational lenses to name just a few. Central to these discoveries have been innovations in technology pushing the observational frontiers of sensitivity as well as spatial, temporal and spectral resolution. One such innovation in technology- radio interferometry – was awarded a Nobel Prize for Phisycs. The SKA will carry on this tradition of innovation by combining fundamental developments in radio frequency technology , data transport and high-performance computing.

The SKA will be the world's premier imaging and surveying telescope with a combination of unprecedented versatility, sensitivity and resolution that will open up new  windows of discovery.

Participating Countries
Organisations from ten countries are currently members of the SKA Organisation: Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. India is an Associate Member. Further countries have expressed their interest in joining the SKA Organisation which will continue to expand over the coming years.
Furthermore, whilst 11 member countries above are the core of the SKA, around 100 organisations across about 20 countries (NB all member countries + Brazil, France, Japan, Malta, South Korea, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, the USA) have been participating in the design and development of the SKA and are now engaged in the detailed design of the telescope*:
