Pediatric Zirconia Crowns are Changing pediatric restorative dentistry!

As recently as the early 1990's children requiring crowns to restore chipped, fractured or severely decayed teeth had no option other than stainless steel or resin-based. If decay is diagnosed at early ages, primary molars do not exfoliate until 10-12 years old which may be years of a stainless steel (silver) appearance. Today's dentists have several esthetically appealing options they can offer, with zirconia crowns at the head of the class. The esthetic superiority, coupled with unmatched durability, and many other advantages, make Zirconia crowns an excellent option for nearly all primary anterior crown restorations and for many posterior crown restorations as well.

According to a 2013 survey reported by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the demand for all types of cosmetic services for adults has continued to rise annually. It is not hard to understand that as young and middle-aged parents begin receiving cosmetic dental services, their desire for enhanced esthetic restoration of their children's teeth increases as well.

Dr. Healey offers the EZ Pedo Zirconia Crowns which is a very esthetic, durable restoration that can be used in place of stainless steel crowns or other bonded restorative options.

Pediatric Zirconia crowns, like stainless steel crowns, come pre-made in six or seven different sizes for each tooth and are supplied in kits. The most obvious advantage of Zirconia crowns is their excellent esthetics. Moreover, Zirconia crowns will not chip nor will they discolor and break down over time like resin strip crowns often do.

As children can often be critical of each other, parents and children love these crowns as they look perfectly natural in the mouth! They are approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and many insurance companies are covering a portion of these crowns as they have become quite popular in the industry.

In general, children tend to do best when their life is predictable. They are more likely to tolerate a dental procedure when they have been told in advance what to expect. Providing information is particularly important in the case of an anxious child.

Dr. Healey's Treatment Coordinator provides a show and tell visit prior to the actual restorative treatment for young children. Role play is presented in a very fun and gentle manner with Freddie the Frog as the patient, and your child as the assistant! He or she will visualize chasing sugar bugs with dental tools, experience sensations and sounds! At the conclusion of each visit, a goodie bag will be given to continue role playing at home which allows your child time to process this visit! For more information about this wonderful and very helpful experience, please visit our website at www.dochealey.com.

Dr. Michael Healey has moved his office from the Northridge area of Sandy Springs to Preston Ridge Road in Alpharetta, across the street from the Northside Hospital medical complex.

All parents accompany their children for all visits. Our new office incorporates all the new advances in pediatric care, including white zirconium crowns for children, instead of stainless steel, and gag-free x-rays! Clear porcelain brackets are available for orthodontics, as well as lingual braces. We have TV sets over the treatment chairs and of course, the traditional prize basket!

For children uncomfortable with a trip to the dentist requiring extensive treatment, Dr. Healey offers in office conscious sedation or hospital dentistry. For our special needs children, we set aside a morning each week to allow more time for their visit!
