These are some friends of mine. Their daughter (seen here as a preemie) is trying to raise money for their March of Dimes team. There are two days left in the fundraiser. This little girl had a twin sister that didn't make it. I'm asking simply for a #signalboost ... If the cause is something you feel strongly about, please consider donating to their team or directly to the organization.

HEY PLUSIANS!  I NEED YOUR HELP! :D
It has come to my attention that the esteemed +Rebecca Blain is working on a new project.  This is a fabulous adventure/romance set in her own world, and from what I've seen, it's going to be a rollercoaster ride of awesome.

Here's where you come in.

I suggested that she serialize this story, to which she guffawed and said "NO WAY".  But then she had a change of heart.  "MAYBE," she said, thawing slightly, "I will do it only if you can get 100 shares on a post about serializing this project."

She doesn't think it can be done.  Surely she underestimates the power of G+, my friends!  Rebecca cracks the whip over us, so maybe it's time we turn the tables, hmm??

Share this and encourage your friends to do so, too.  We only need a minimum of 100 shares, so this should be a cakewalk, right?

I'll even sweeten the deal, since I have nothing at stake here.  At 100 shares, I'll choose one of the 100 at random and will do an avatar drawing for them.  If we hit 150, I'll draw one of the characters for the story for Rebecca to use as she sees fit. If we hit 200, I'll do another random selection for a second avatar, and at 300, I'll draw another character for Rebecca.

WHO'S WITH ME??  PLUSIANS, GO!!!!

ETA: Remember to actually RESHARE, or you won't be in the running for free art (and it won't help our cause!) Fly, my pretties, flyyyyyy!

ETA the Second:  It seems that Rebecca has offered another prize--if we hit 500 (!!) then she'll toss in a prize pack from her Eye of God campaign!  Keep the shares going!!

My sister is trying to use #GoFundMe  to open a home daycare. We know what she's trying to start, we know her name, we know her location, we know the type of business. We can't find any search criteria that can actually list her thing.

Hear that: The search interface is totally #unusable. It flat-out does not work.

As an added bonus, they're using an excessive list of stopwords. (These are words that are ignored when added to a search query.) Oh, and quoted searches appear to be totally broken -- like there's no way they've ever tested them totally broken. (Do folks really know so little about search interfaces that they add "little" to a query when it is not in the name of the business? It shouldn't be a stopword.)

Since we're developing using Solr at work, it makes me sad because there really is absolutely zero reason to have a search interface that sucks for a site like this. Being moderately functional would be easy. Supporting an advanced search allowing you to restrict by state (impossible with their current site), city, type of business, etc would be easy. Shoot even real faceted searches allowing you to "dig down" to exactly what you want is explicitly supported in Solr -- and in the PHP interface to Solr.

This? This is so badly written it should be actively avoided. It would have been easier to give my sister money with nothing more than a Paypal account and a free Google site dedicated to her home business. (Plus such a configuration could have worked for her after she got funded.)

I've been toying with some ideas on music aggregation. The problem: I don't listen to music I can't share with my children without fear of violating copyright. This means I listen to a lot of CC licensed music, a lot of music...

I was looking at public domain sheet music the other day, and I was struck by the number of songs that used to be written regarding the death of children.

I mean, a person could release an entire album of public domain songs about the death of children...

Why would FoxNews have a commentator that recommends genocide? (Particularly when the majority of domestic terrorist attacks have been made by white US-born Christians.)

Sometimes I wonder what conquering old age will mean for religion. If a religion focuses on a life-to-come, what do they do when any access to that life requires murder or suicide?

And what if we get the longevity before we can actually conquer all disease? Sure, there's evidence that "age related illness" actually includes far more than we once thought, but... Imagine being effectively immortal while being unable to walk because of a super-polio...

What if people only died through "acts of God"?

If we can master the simple sugar used by the "water bear", would it mean that space would be safe enough we could mostly survive short-term exposure to vacuum? Would we need both fishy antifreeze and the water-bear non-stick sugar flowing through our veins? (I imagine any prolong exposure would result in damage unrelated to water loss/expansion. Still, if a space suit had a hibernate mode the immediate concern about oxygen deprivation would be moot.)

God bless Steven. Don't see much point in continuing. We are on two different planets.

Introduction
I am a part-time philosopher, and a full-time polytheist. I am a father and a sociable introvert. I like to think, and I like to write.

I do not value being unique. I believe that being unique is something sold to the masses of the US in a (successful) attempt to fragment the population and to create artificial division.

In my nightmares, I am the only human that is like me. In those dreams, I fear for the human race.
