Shimon Peres, who served twice as Israel's prime minister and once as president, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994, died last night (Tuesday). He was 93. Shmuel Schnitzer, Chairman of The Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI), mourned the passing of Peres and said: “Together with all Israelis, we mourn the loss of Shimon Peres. Peres successfully bridged political strife and as president he was deeply loved both in Israel and abroad”.

The September Hong Kong Jewelry & Gem Fair, the largest of its kind in Asia, closed last Saturday, and the mood among the exhibitors was optimistic. Israel Diamond Exchange President, Yoram Dvash, returned this week from Hong Kong and spoke favorably of the show and its impact: “In contrast to the last several years, this year’s show was marked by very good traffic. Buyers came in large numbers, and in addition to buyers from India, who come every year, there were many buyers from other East-Asian countries”.

De Beers has released the 2016 Diamond Insight report over the weekend, in which it claims that despite lower rough diamond demand in 2015, consumer diamond jewelry demand went down only 2% and remained “robust” at $79 billion.
