My husband and I were visiting St. Thomas for the first time and booked this resort through Expedia. When we arrived a little early to check in we were told our room was not yet ready and to come back around 3PM (which turned out to be a lie). When we returned there was a line of frustrated and angry people. I was told the hotel manager needed to speak to me and when I asked why I didn't get an answer. When I finally made my way to the front desk I was told there were no rooms available for us!!! When I asked how this happened I was told "it happens sometimes" and "it's the same as when airlines overbook their flights."!! They ended up paying for our first night at the nearby Point Pleasant hotel and a group of other guests also had to spend their first night at Point Pleasant since they too didn't have their room at Sugar Bay. It seems like this happens a lot and is not an occasional mistake and it doesn't matter what travel site people used to book the reservation (Expedia, Travelocity, direct booking, etc.) all had similar issues when they arrived. They apologized for the "inconvenience" and I felt like they really didn't care how much stress this caused me and my husband and it was clear to me that they don't know how to run a resort. They also had the wrong checkout date for us as well. I called Expedia and they called Sugar Bay to make sure they had the correct checkout date and to refund our money for the first night. They also were going to forward my complaint to their complaint department. Even though Expedia confirmed the correct checkout date with Sugar Bay, Sugar Bay did not update their records and our room key was deactivated one day before we were checking out. Also, when we finally did get into our room we had issues with the air conditioner not working, no hot water, and a faulty light fixture. I will never stay here again and I do not recommend that anyone stay here because you are taking a chance that you will not have your room when you arrive.

Awful management - the only thing they couldn't screw up was the beautiful view! Elevator to room - pitch dark with no working light; took 36 hours to fix! Noodles Bar (part of all inclusive) - Ran out of noodles over an hour before closing TWICE. the last day, they were short of 50% of the items by 4pm and they opened at 3pm. They wanted you back to the normal restaurant that sold burgers, sandwiches, etc! Fan in room - when it was on medium or high, it could fly off the ceiling at any moment as it shook violently. Brought to staff's attention all 3 days and nothing done except writing down the information at front desk each time like they were truly concerned; then again nothing. AC in room - keep the TV on so you don't hear the roar at night. Don't upgrade to an Ocean Room - they insisted our room was Ocean room because we have Bay view and over a mountaintop, there was a glimmer of the ocean. Bartenders and regular staff were very friendly; but manager was awful and couldn't care what your problem was; just wrote it down knowing eventually you are leaving! This is my first review ever; so it was worth my time to alert others of the pending problems you will get. Great views, nice pool, nice regular staff. Awful management. If someone bought them out, it would be paradise.

Very much disappointed in the way they cater to their guests. Their lunch is permanently only burgers and fries. The restaurant-chef does not care whether you like his food or not. We did not have a single decent lunch in seven days. They put a label of a "chicken soup" while it smells like fish and contains fish in it. They call "brown" rice that was never brown. The chef did not object to all this, he offered that we should not have come to his restaurant to eat, but there was no other choice for lunch but that place on the beach. Very sad that in our day and age people who are in the heart of food industry never heard of a healthy food. We strongly believe that we were not the problem here: the chef should go! Sincerely hope that the resort administration reads my review and takes steps to improvement. Please do not spoil your beautiful place with filthy food!

I was at Sugar Bay Resort 3-31-14 through 4-5-14. I had many concerns while there. First one being no reservation for us when we walked through the front door, don't know if it was the fault of the hotel or Vacations To Go. Lots more concerns as the day went on, then more each day until I decided it was time to get management involved. I finally talked with a gentleman named Michael on 4-3-14 and he explained that he had been brought in to correct all of the problems with the hotel. He promised me that would contact me before check out on that Saturday before 11am. I have much to say, good and bad about my trip but I would like someone to contact me before I say more. I have just calmed down enough to even start to think of writing a post. I am not one that thinks everything should be perfect, but I am one that just spent a lot of money to go on vacation and I can say I didn't enjoy my stay at Sugar Bay all because of the staff. I hope to hear from someone soon.

The Good: The servers in the restaurants are the best! Ms. Augustina "Tina" Turner, Ms. Shirley, Mr. Swayze and the others were great. They were more than happy to accommodate any request including taking pictures of you on the balcony. The concierges Sonny and the others providing this service really take their jobs seriously making sure that as guest we are happy when we arrive. The Sales Team, Ms. Lorna and Clyde did an awesome job making our anniversary a memorable despite it not going as my husband had originally planned; Ms. Lorna went out of her way to make up for the mistake. Activities were good also. Ms. Kendall is the life of the party. She is going to make sure that you have a good time on her watch and we appreciated this about her. She welcomed all guest during activities and you can tell that she was genuinely interested in getting to know the people that were staying at the resort. The Bad: Housekeeping is not the greatest. One day it took until 2pm for someone to clean our room and then we were told that there were no more wash clothes so she couldn't replace our old ones. The cleaning of the room left a lot to be desired. Cuisine was not the greatest. Breakfast tended to be on the luke warm side instead of hot. Options for meals are limited and they tend to recycle the same meals; we were there six days and breakfast was the same everyday with a rotation of waffles, pancakes, and french toast. The restaurants close early and the menus are limited. The food at the Mangrove is not the best. Had the Jerk Mahi Mahi with remoulade sauce and it was the worst (the remoulade sauce was actually tarter sauce)! Bites in the Lounge was also limited offering only a few items until midnight and the dessert left a lot to be desired The Ugly: Guest Services needs to be sent back to hospitality school, especially the Assistant Manager Marliqua. I'm not sure how she received her position, maybe by default but she sucks at it. We were to have a king room and instead we were given a double. We requested a change immediately with the assistance of our concierge, Sonny. Told to call back at 6pm arrival day, first thing the following morning, after 11am, after 1pm, after 3pm. Doing so each time until Marliqua informed us there were no rooms available (although people were continuously checking in). She apologized and then promptly informed me that she didn't care if I accepted her apology or not. Needless to say I asked for the manager...surprise a room is now available. However, this room was worse than the first as the water from the sink was rust colored and the room needed some work. We stayed considering the hard time we had getting the king room, but we won't be back at the Sugar Bay. If the customer service skills were better, we could probably consider the Sugar Bay again, but Marliqua messed it up for everyone. I better understand now why the Wyndham pulled out of this partnership and why all the locals felt sorry for us when we stated we were staying at the Sugar Bay.

Staying at Sugar Bay was really the best week I've possibly ever had. St. Thomas is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I booked a Living Social all-inclusive deal and couldn't have been any happier. The room's view was gorgeous, the food was great (considering it was all-inclusive), and there were multiple options of where to eat. The beach was beautiful, pool was beautiful. The staff were SO, SO nice. I'd recommend this over and over again. I've been checking back weekly for another deal, but haven't found any :( I hope the all-inclusive deal goes back on Living Social eventually, because I'd purchase it again in a heartbeat. Thank you Sugar Bay!
