If a convention of polar bears could nominate one person to be Secretary of State, it would be John Kerry.  Really.

The European Union controls enough votes to end the trade in polar bear parts and fur at the next meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.  But will it act, or will it be distracted by misleading Canadian rhetoric?  Right now many EU nations are undecided on the question.  The next few weeks will be crucial.

Why is the United States paying for a federal agency to compete with small pest control businesses? An important exposé in the Sacramento Bee highlights continues problems with this agency.

"Look, the city is extremely vulnerable to damaging storm surges just for its geography, and climate change is increasing that risk," said Ben Strauss, director of the sea level rise program at the research group Climate Central in Princeton, N.J. “Three of the top 10 highest floods at the Battery since 1900 happened in the last two and a half years. If that’s not a wake-up call to take this seriously, I don’t know what is."

Wildlife Services is a little-known federal agency much in need of reform that sadly spends much of its time killing native wildlife across the United States -- but now an unusual budget request from the Obama Administration may give it a new mission.  One that even  conservationists could get behind.  But only "if" the agency gets its act together first.

Russian scientists warn that increasing hunting pressures are adding dangerously to the pressure placed on polar bears by climate change:

"According to some estimates, each year, approximately 600 polar bears are hunted in Canada and the parts of 441 are internationally traded.
'There is a growing market for bear pelts in Russia and China. What adds to the problem is that the polar bear is listed in Appendix 2 of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), rather than Appendix 1 which would have guaranteed that there was no commercial trade in its parts,' said Vorontsova."

The United States--with Russian support--has proposed fix this problem and ban the international commercial trade in polar parts at the next meeting of CITES but Canada is fighting it hard.

The world needs to act to give polar bears the best possible chance to survive climate change.
