The ever increasing complexity of the US tax system, particularly as it impacts US citizens overseas, has resulted in an ever increasing number of citizens giving up their citizenship. However, giving up one’s citizenship can be quite costly, as the US imposes an “exit tax” on the renouncing of citizenship under certain circumstances (referred to as “covered expats”).

There are ways to make property funds more resilient against market crises, as has been shown by German regulators who introduced new guidelines on property funds to align the investment horizons of the investors with the natural investment horizon of the underlying assets.

All the new regulations lead to increased costs for asset managers that cannot completely be passed on to investors because European investors have become more cost sensitive over the last few years. Asset managers have to rethink their business models to become more cost efficient
