The use of color, even in a close-up subject will suggest depth in a painting.
"More than a Pear" oil 24x20 by Mary Hildebrand, IL shows the use of color to make areas of the painting recede and create depth. Not only cool colors recede but pale recedes versus dark and blurred versus high detail.
