Dunmow Rhodes FC in conjunction with the Essex FA, hosted Dunmow's first ever Girls football tournament on Saturday 26th March at the Dunmow recreation ground. It was a 5 a side tournament with teams coming from all over Essex. The 16 teams competing were Chelmsford City x 1 team, Island Girls x 1, Leigh Celtic x 1, Hutton x 2, Colebrook Royals X 2, AFC Leyton x 1, Writtle Minors X 2, Colchester Town x 3, Dunmow Rhodes x 3.
The entire event was extremely well supported and played in fantastic spirit, with all players receiving medals at the end for competing in this historic event.
This was the first time many of the girls from Rhodes had played in such a big tournament and they were a credit to the club putting in some excellent performances. Michael Richardson, Rhodes head coach and head of MRFA Football Academy was in attendance and was very impressed with the high standard of football being played by all.
Dunmow Rhodes head of Girls football Sarah Smith was the chief organiser of the event with support from Dave Wildgoose and they must take great credit for how well it all went. Sarah is currently taking her FA Level 2 coaching badges and has been the driving force behind the development of girls only football at Rhodes with well over 30 girls now with the club.
If you think your daughter may be interested in girls football, please contact Sarah Smith 07793 325930.

2 teams, 18 amazing girls, 1 club = great fun! 😀 U8's and U10's played this morning at Writtle. Both did brilliantly and the U8's almost won! The main thing is we had a great time, lots of smiles and we are getting better and stronger every game. Well done everyone and thanks for the amazing support parents. 👍

Dunmow Rhodes Girls Football Team

Local Dunmow parent Sarah Smith started free girls only training sessions in September last year.

Since then the sessions have gone from strength to strength with Sarah now training between 20-30 girls training every Saturday. The Group includes girls from 4 years of age up to 12 years of age of all abilities. The training squad is pictured below.

Sarah knew there was lots of girls out there wanting to play but many were put off at the thought of mixing with the boys, so by offering girls only sessions the girls feel comfortable and soon grow in confidence.

Sarah visited local primary schools and offered free after school sessions which helped encourage interest.

In January this this year Sarah contacted local clubs and started arranging friendly games. Sunday 14th February saw the first ever match for the new team. It was against Colchester Town U9, an established club playing in the Mid Essex Girls League. Although Dunmow lost the game 1-0 for the first ever full length game on a grass pitch this was an outstanding result for the girls who had never played a match together before. The team was Shannon, Amy, Lucy, Beth, Amiee, Violet, Millie, Sophie and Madison. The team is pictured below.

Over the next few months Sarah has lots more friendly games arranged against Basildon, Writtle and Saffron Walden amongst others. In addition to the under 12s, friendly matches have been arranged for U8 girls as well.

If any girls would like to play football in Dunmow then please join in, all ages and abilities are welcome whether you've played before or not. Perhaps a mum or two would also like to help Sarah with the group? The training sessions are free at the HRS Astro pitch.

Wednesday 6pm-7pm ages 8 years and above
Saturday's 9am -10am ages 4 years and above.

For more details please call Sarah on 07793 325930.

Out There thinks this is a great story and as a community we should help Sarah develop this opportunity for the girls to play sport. We will post match reports as they happen and keep you updated on the squad’s progress.

Please like and share.
