A simple garden plan can be just right, like this garden in Lake Macquarie. These golden balls are a great feature and everything survives on the water that comes from the sky. As a bonus, it’s low maintenance, taking very little time each month to keep it looking good

Look out for Army Grubs this month.
The grass has come out of nowhere at my place, since a bit of rain and milder weather, with that glorious Autumn sunshine. Just watch out for Army Grub. They often hit in March, just as the lawns are really lush once the punishing heat of summer is gone. A way to check for them is to place a mat on the lawn overnight in the suspect zone. Check underneath it in the morning. If they’re about they’ll be there

If you are thinking about pot plants which can handle our very hot summer, these are two options which work for me; Variegated Rubber plant and Frangipanni. They live happily on my east facing porch, with the occasional watering. Both can cope with drying out and full sun on all but those days which hit or exceed the mid 40s. Just remember never to allow your Rubber Plant to grow into the ground (including through the bottom of a pot) or it will become the tree from hell

The Murraya & Buxus hedges and shrubs after trimming at my customer’s garden in Eleebana, NSW. The previously overgrown Murraya hedge and Photinias were given a hard cut back with secateurs, loppers and the chainsaw last September. It was a lot of work but the gardens are now totally redeemed. At that time the gardens were fertilised with cow manure and then mulched with Forest mulch. Now it all presents beautifully as a magnificent formal entrance garden to this lovely lakeside home

Think carefully before you toss out those old garden ornaments. Good old Bugs Bunny here may be a bit weathered but he's still charming

These Iceberg standard roses are in an East Maitland garden maintained by HOLTS. They are providing a wonderful late Autumn flush of blooms. They were trimmed 8 weeks ago, with the hedge trimmer

What is the value of gardens? We use them to enhance the look of our homes, to relax in, to grow food, to exercise us and our pets, as a private buffer zone from the world, to provide shade and to enjoy the sunshine in and as a haven for birds and animals which we can watch

Camellias grow really in big pots. They just need to be potted up in the right mix and then placed in a position which receives morning sun

If you have orchids in pots in the garden, be mindful of all this Easter rain exacerbating white orchid scale problems. I've just treated mine with a wipe of methylated spirits & for now they are moved to a dry spot until the weather changes
