One last image from the Outer Banks before Arnie Zann and I head northeast to Mid-coast Maine.
Usually, we stay away from the hot (literally and fiuguratively) mid-day sun, but there are exceptions. After all, for every “rule” in art, there are many exceptions. Three of us were enjoying lunch on the Outer Banks, and I kept noticing the layers and shapes of the clouds. There were darks and highlights and bonus reflections, and I thought, “Hmmm, black and white!” With a marker buoy in the foreground, I had the combination I wanted.

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and sky… " John Masefield's "Sea Fever," Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea," Laurence Sisson's "Silver Dory" and Winslow Homer's "The Fog Warning" are amongst my favorites. While a friend was doing stories on IG about the teeming rain on the Outer Banks, I was reminded of its many moods, from that little storm called “Sandy” to winds so fierce that sand gets into every part of your body to a lovely serene evening such as this one we enjoyed last fall. We never tire of photographing the many moods of OBX and look forward to a quick visit next week. Next time after that will be at the end of October for our Lighthouses workshop.

The patterns of the Palouse are amazing. Arnie Zann and have treated them differently, but they attract us both. Here, I found a complicated simplicity in the design that spoke black and white to me.

On the eve of this very special day, Independence Day, it is good to reflect on our beginnings in this country. We became independent for a reason. We all came from different countries, perhaps last generation, perhaps way before. Hopefully, we have all read it, perhaps not recently enough, but as a reminder, part of our Declaration of Independence states:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..."
Here is to our future and the hope that we will all learn to talk to one another again and stand up for what is right as was envisioned by our Founding Fathers. As the preamble to our US Constitution states, "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Arnie and I never tire of photographing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We are drawn to the water, the surf, and the people. This pair amused me. The dog clearly was more interested in a walk, while the owner was intent on finding the next shell or piece of sea glass. Neither one noticed the big wave in the background. We will see more of this in late October when we return for our fall workshop there.

As you can imagine, there is a lot that goes into running workshops. There is a lot of planning starting a year ahead. Then, before each workshop begins, Arnie Zann and I drive around and review our locations to see what has changed since the last visit. In the Palouse, crops change, and with them, the color palette. Patterns change, too. Arnie and I look out over the landscape and think this particular location might be what we want in 2016. Who knows what 2017 will bring?

One of the reasons that Arnie and I love photographing in Joshua Tree is that there are no real iconic images the way there are in other national parks. It means that everyone has to seek his and her own vision and come up with unique images, not the same-old/same-old copies of post-card scenes that are sold in the park shops.

Last fall, Arnie and I visited dear friends out on the Outer Banks to take in the Super Moon. Mother Nature has a mind of her own. Always has, always will. A bank of clouds on the horizon hid the moonrise, but the effects at that time of evening were wonderful. Super-moon pink clouds, moodiness, and the magic of the Outer Banks. We pretty much had the place to ourselves!

On Memorial Day, that we now celebrate on a convenient Monday, it is good to remember that those over the decades, even centuries now, who died for us fought for all of us, not just an annointed few. E pluribus unum is something we should all study. There is an interesting history of The Great Seal - and really the beginnings of our country - at https://lnkd.in/gRT7fzh. In one of the original designs, there is reference to a number of countries from which our early ancestors came. Without immigration, we would have had no country. Without immigration, we would have had no soldiers who defended our freedoms and that of others. Let us reflect on all our honored fallen, of all races and creeds, who gave their lives for the rest of us.

I have sailed past and visited by land a certain lighthouse on the Maine Coast, but never have I had the opportunity to go inside, even after all these decades. Last summer, while Arnie Zann and I were doing final checking for our workshop, the lighthouse door was open. I got permission to go up and stand right next to this wonderful Fresnel (pronounced FRAY-nell) lens that has saved so many ships from disaster on the ledges.
