That old school Montell Jordan track "This is how we do it" popped into my head on a drive back up from Palo Alto with +Tatyana Foltz on Friday.

I played it again for people at work on Monday and it just happened to be while +Amy Simpson was watching a gif of Gizmo. She noticed it synced up and then I whipped this up in movie maker.

Evidently I didn't really listen to any music in 2011 and missed some very good stuff. Also I just broke down and did the unlimited music on teh Googles. So I am finding all kinds of music I missed.

Craigslist Camper Adventure

Yesterday was a huge day for us! We have wanted to get a little camper, like a Westfalia for many years now. With dreams of cross country road trips. Or just easier camping escapades. We didn't want to register/insure/maintain another vehicle. That is when Tot cam up with the idea of getting a little camping trailer. So last week we decided to do it. We ordered a tow hitch kit for our car and started looking on Craigslist of super cheap old campers.

The tow kit showed up the night before we were to cruise out to take a look at this little guy out in Pinole, CA. So we got up ran some errands and started installing the kit our selves. We first tried to cal a ton of car places but none could do it same day.

It took use about 2 hours. Drilling out bigger holes in the car frame by far took the longest. Then fishing the 4 bolts through the frame. Fortunately the kit came with special wire to hold the bolts and it went relatively easily. The unfortunate surprise was there was a little back stop  tab in the shaft that the actual hitch went into. It was about 4mm too shallow to allow the hitch pin to go in. So more tedious drilling was involved.

Tot hooked up the light kit and fished all the wiring under the interior paneling.

We headed out into Bay Bridge construction traffic. That caused us to go all the way down through Hayward to get up north of Berkeley. We showed up late but the trailer was in excellent condition and the guy was super nice. We were very happy with it and headed home (at 55 mph). We made it home by around 7:30pm PDST. We were completely beat but happy as clams!

lol. We don't actually pay for the second spot. We used to park the bike behind the car but Tot backed into it twice. So, I started parking in the empty spot. No one ever said anything. The building management has changed so many times I think they think it's ours.

Here are the photos from the Microsoft store on the Xbox One launch night. We got all kinds of swag. They had xbox themed food and drinks. All in all it was a lot of fun.

[Nerd Porn, Not safe for non-nerds]
So, I finished up the big huge migration from my 15x1tb mdadm raid 6 array to a 6x3tb Windows Storage Spaces setup. I am in general I am really liking storage spaces. It is far more tolerant of plugging and unplugging devices. I had so many bad experiences with drives disconnecting just for a second and the whole array degrading and taking days to rebuild. Windows storage spaces isn't nearly as concerned about re-balancing parity across all the drives. It also requires a flat 33% loss in usable space. But being able to mix drive types and sizes is worth the trade off. We will see in the long run how well it works for me. My old mdadm array lasted me something like 5 years and was still kicking. But that is more a testament to the quality of off the shelf WD drives.

The blue drive was the original Ubuntu systems drive. I hooked it up in Virtual Box VM in Windows. The original idea was to run Windows underneath and just run my old Ubuntu install in a VM. But the more I thought about it the more I found my self sick of managing everything in Ubuntu. So I just installed nginx in Windows set it up as a service and copied my config over from Ubuntu. I installed the windows counter parts to all the services I was running under Ubuntu (sabnzbd, node.js, plex, mysql...) and was up and running in almost no time. I installed an open SSH server. I haven't messed with it much but so far I'm liking admining in Windows. I'm sure I will hit some pain points sooner or later.

Update: Well living without a full linux install lasted about two nights(until I had to do work). I was just too locked into the convenience of cloud9 IDE. I got some open SSH clients running on windows but that would only get you a windows shell.

I tried installing and running my own cloud9 IDE instance but as usual that ended in failure due to a month old know issue.

I did set up a headless ubuntu server install through virtual box that runs as a windows service and runs on start up.

I'm pretty happy with the end solution. I would rather just run cloud9 in windows and have one less system to worry about. But I do like having a full bash shell for the times when I feel typy.

Introduction
I'm a digital ninja by trade and habit.  I'm a gadget nut, Android lover, and gamer. I love smoking (meat) and BBQ. I love riding my new scooter/motorcycle (Piaggio MP3 500). I've been known to dabble in the deep nerd arts of table tob gaming, RC helicopters and other general hobitry. I've been pretty obsessed with YUI and Node.js for a good year now. It's treated me well. I'm tacitly aware and interested in politics, although it usually just ends up making me angry.

Note: The shaved cat is not mine. A shaved cat as an avatar has been a running thing with me for going on 5 years now. I would never shave a cat.
