Said before and I’ll say it again: since the NYT stopped carrying Richard Rothstein’s contributions on education c. 2002, it’s been slim pickings for anything sensible on the subject from “the paper of record.” Maybe that slogan should now be, ‘The Paper of Broken Record”?

@anonymous: I've been advocating for more specialists teaching in elementary grades for a long time. I'm told that younger children need more stability and should therefore have only one teacher for all subjects. I'm not an expert on that issue, but it seems clear that there are far too many elementary teachers put in the difficult position of having to teach mathematics who fear, loathe, or simply don't have the skills necessary to teach it well, and who thus cause or exacerbate problems for their students. Would having a teacher come in for an hour a day to teach math be THAT disruptive to routine that, assuming this was an effective math teacher, the students would NOT benefit? I think that's a gamble worth taking.
