Isola di Ortigia, the Island now part of the city #Syrakus in #Sicily, #Italy was once home to #Archimedes in the 3rd centure BC (Back then Syracusa still belonged to the greeks). Everywhere around the city you find monuments and other reminders of him and his work, just like this #Archimedan Spiral drawn on this sqare.

It is the locus of points corresponding to the locations over time of a point moving away from a fixed point with a constant speed along a line which rotates with constant angular velocity. Equivalently, in polar coordinates (r, θ) it can be described by the equation:
r = a + bθ.

Because I took this sphere from the center of this spiral, in the rectengular projection of this picture the spiral is displayed as a series of parallel straight lines :-)

Gole dell’Alcantara, or the Alcantara canyon in #Sicily, #Italy, displays the strange shapes that occur when lava cools down slowly. Similar to the giants causeway in Ireland the Basalt forms (distorted) pentagonal and hexagonal columns.

The quality could be better but the water was really cold on my feet (those swimmers must be crazy ;-))

Another ancient greek #Amphitheatre under the hot sun of #Syracusa, #Sicily, #Italy.
Just a few hundred meters away one can find an ancient roman theatre showing the mix of culture so typical for #Sycily
