Got a new article up about comic book piracy and one typically ignored option for publishers and creators to respond to its effects. Next week, I'll (hopefully) write something a little less controversial for once.

Got a new article up about geek equality. This'll probably be the last thing I write about lady geeks for a long, long time, so enjoy it. Next up, I'm going to write about Harry Potter...

Any other time, I'd be ready to talk shit about Wal-Mart. Right now, quite glad I don't have goose crap and mud in my eyes.

I'm not much for 'em myself. Just wanted to share the link because I love that the Black Panthers took to screaming legal advice at people.

Listen, I think it's lovely that you want to get to know me. That's a wonderful idea and hey, I'd like to get to know you too.

But then there's the matter of you circling me for self-promotion. Yeah, maybe I'm a bit prejudiced, but somehow, I doubt that you have 4,163 friends. I could be wrong. I could be wrong.

Still, the reason I'm a part of social media isn't to be talked at - it's to talk with.

There are those that I follow because I'm a fan, people like John Scalzi, but that's because they do good work. I don't want to know your work. I don't know you. And you circling me in order to spam me with adverts about your new e-book? That is not how we get to know each other.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that's how I know to avoid you.

Oh, and before you go, yes - I do know what it's like. I'm a freelance writer. It's been a rough year for me too. Finding loyal fans takes time. But just like how I approach my writing, I would rather take the risk of going slow and steady.

So, if you would like to communicate with me like I'm another human being, feel free to drop me in a circle. Otherwise, don't fucking bother.

I'm always partial to the Reliant Robin and Ford Focus bits. But so far, my favorite episode has been either the Bolivia trip or the Arctic journey.

Content Do Cost - Why You're Paying More for Netflix

Netflix movies and TV shows account for nearly 30 percent of traffic into homes during peak evening hours, compared with less than 17 percent for Web browsing.
- Study by Sandvine Inc.

“At $7.99 a month, we can’t provide unlimited content. We compete for a very specific and small part of the pie. We don’t have everything, but we have a great bargain. That’s what we want the brand proposition to be … Apple and Amazon are very good at being comprehensive.”
- Reed Hastings, Netflix Founder and CEO

Netflix had a $161 million profit last year on sales of $2.2 billion, and it ended last quarter with $342 million in cash on hand. [Its] global subscriber base grew almost 70% over the past year, to 23.6 million users.
- Report from CNNMoney

So, Netflix is increasing prices.

For some reason, all the feedback I’m seeing has been some combination of confusion and anger. Do you people really not know how Netflix has been doing business?

Back in 2008, Netflix struck a big deal with Starz for rights to streaming movies due to a loophole in a contract the network made with the Hollywood studios. Essentially, when streaming was still in its infancy, no one paid much attention to how much anyone paid for rights. Now, due to what I’ve shown you above, the studios are starting to take notice. And it hasn’t been a sudden thing either.

Netflix has always been at the mercy of the Hollywood studios because that’s where the content comes from. Without hit movies and good programming, people would bail on Instant Watch without a second thought. Most users don’t give a fuck about how Reed Hastings has to negotiate with anyone - they just want to see that great blockbuster everyone is raving about. As soon as that quality starts to drop, the company is going to start losing millions of dollars.

And understandably so, as the trend isn’t to spoil users any less. Five years ago, the idea that I could stream episodes of Doctor Who in high def and then, on a whim, switch over to a movie like Iron Man 2 within seconds for less than $10 a month (and no trouble from the RIAA) sounded like fantasy. Now, it’s reality. But still, there’s lots of users complaining that the Instant Watch selection isn’t enough. So, Netflix’s response is going to be to make a deal with the devil - in order to woo those dissenters, they’re going to raise prices to bring in more content.

I’m not talking about the magical money machine that is Netflix - we’re talking about a company that gave up on selling used DVDs in order to soothe Hollywood studios and to focus on its growing streaming business. Their entire business is to provide the best content it can for its subscribers while still appeasing those that create the content. (And that’s why you won’t see them explain the reasoning behind the price increase.)

So, to anyone who thinks that this price hike is making Netflix look more like Comcast, you’re right - that’s what happens when you have to deal with Hollywood.

Fair enough, i read that laughed because its so similar to what you were saying, now Im thinking netflix is just going to print out all the rants on their facebook page, blog and anywhere else they can find; take them to sony, universal and the rest of the movie companies and say "heres why you need to let me stream your movies"
