Ho'opi'i Falls in Wailua earlier this year shows plenty of water despite a growing trend in Hawaii and globally. In the past 10 years rainfall totals are down by 23% at Princeville weather station when compared to their 94 year history of precipitation data. The Poipu Station (over by the Pointe at Poipu) has seen a 20% decrease when compared to its 60+ years history of recorded data.
The news today that Rainbow Falls in Hilo has dried up speaks to the alarming drought trend that started a few years ago on the southern portion of the State.

Can we afford NOT to increase our efforts to promote wind and solar over fossil fuels? Living on an island where we see in real time increased beach erosion due to higher ocean levels, storms more fierce than in previous years. Droughts across the state of Hawaii that we rarely experienced in the past thirty years of living here as an agronomist and now as a rancher.

If only renewable sources of energy could receive a significant portion of the fossil fuel subsidy.
