This is an amazing story. What I can't understand is how they have managed to wire the output up to the optic nerve. One patient says he can tell the difference between straight and curved lines which means there is some retinotopic mapping but how did they get the mapping right to the optic nerve? Any ideas vision scientists out there?

Dose it really have to be that exact?  The brain should rewire based on the information it is getting?
"I am able to make out a curve or a straight line close-up but I find things at distance more difficult. It is still early days as I have to learn to interpret the signals being sent to my brain from the chip."

Miguel Nicolelis worked suggested that right?

Here is my post on "Why we need a brain" and no I did not plagiarize it from the excellent TED talk last year given by my friend Daniel Wolpert though I do acknowledge, Dan does pose this very same question with the same example. However, I heard about the sea squirt story first from Francis Cricks's autobiography "What Mad Pursuit" (1988) and I also learned that Rudolfo Llinas also wrote about the sea squirt in 2001. Wherever, it came from it is an interesting story (though I have spoken to biologists who don't confirm its true)

Heading off to London to record an interview with John Brockman in advance of the publication of my new book, "The Self Illusion." Should be posted up on Edge.org later. Will post the link. Meanwhile "The Self Illusion" is being published in the UK this week!

Really enjoying this Bristol-based band, Spiro's new album 'Kaleidophonica' - bit like Philip Glass goes folk just wait 'till they are snapped up by some ad agency.

So it is the broadcast of the final Royal Institution Christmas Lecture tonight on BBC Four. It has been received incredibly well. First night it hit 1million viewers which is probably the best it has been. Last night we pulled off Dan Simons invisible gorilla with a live audience which is no mean feat.Tonight is my favourite lecture!

They will all be up on the Ri Channel page in January. http://richannel.org/ You can look at some of the behind-the-scenes films at the moment

Also, if you are in the UK you can get a free download extract of my new book, "The Self Illusion" here, but if not, it is coming out in the US, Canada, Israel and S. Korea in the spring.
