As a former CEO and senior manager, I’ve been involved in countless management investigations and chaired numerous disciplinary hearings. I’ve also represented employees ‘from the other side’ at Employment Tribunal in cases of unfair dismissal.

I've never seen a dismissal handled as egregiously as that of James Comey.

Here's how not to fire an employee.

Do you wonder how an iconic business like The White Company has elevated itself above the competition to become one of the most successful retailers in the UK today?

If so, you'll love this article where I explain how The White Company has done this. And better still how you can do so too.

I absolutely loved the multi-faceted campaign run by the Heads Together team in the run up to Sunday's London Marathon. It inspired me to write this article in which I explore how you can run a marketing campaign just like William, Kate and Harry, using the DRIP model.

The DRIP model takes you through a simple, structured process for either launching a new product or service, or for re-positioning your brand. It's a handy tool to have in your #marketing arsenal.

There is one discipline that will help you get your business off the ground if you’re a start-up, and will give you a competitive advantage if your business is established

That discipline is CONSISTENCY - getting into (and staying in) a rhythm of consistent implementation of a plan designed with your top goals in mind.

However, I know that consistency is a challenge for a lot of business owners, which is why, in the article, share my 4 step process for maintaining consistency, as well as a template for my 'Weekly Rhythm Register' that will help you to help you stay on track. Planning alone is not enough, so read more over on the blog.

Question: Do you struggle with consistency in your business? I love reading your feedback so please do take a moment to share your experience in the comments box over on the blog here: http://denysewhillier.com/importance-consistency-business/

How quickly is this year flying by?! We’re at the end of Q1 already and I’m in the middle of completing my own quarterly business review. A little later than usual because I took the last week of March off to get organised after moving house.

Quarterly business reviews are one of my favourite activities as they’re an opportunity to go back to my business plan, and focus in detail on one particular aspect of it. Business plans are not static documents, contrary to common belief. They should be a living document that changes and improves as we evolve our business.

My business goals and plans for Quarter 1 were relatively modest as I knew that I would be moving house and would have to dedicate a sizeable amount of time to the process. The legal process can be a bit of a rigmarole here in the UK, however good your solicitor. And then there was the time needed for packing up, and getting settled in my new home. So I made sure to factor this in to my Quarter 1 goals and plans, and give myself the time and space I needed.

Read the rest of the article to find out what I'll be focusing on in Q2, plus three key questions to ask yourself as you reflect on your own first quarter. http://bit.ly/2oVIzkS

DO YOU TRUST YOUR INTUITION?

Most of us experience ‘gut feelings’ we can’t explain. I had an intuition recently about a decision I'd made, and wasn't sure whether or not I should trust it. However, I've been stung before, and the lessons learned were niggling away in the back of my mind. So after initially hesitating, I followed my intuition and it turns out I was right to do so!

Have you every trusted your intuition and been grateful that you did? Or have you ignored your intuition and wished you hadn't? In my latest article, I share more about my own experience, as well as the science behind intuition and how this works in business.

HOW ANITA RODDICK CHANGED THE BUSINESS WORLD

Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop, was a crusading entrepreneur for whom candour was integral to her business success. Fierce, passionate, unconventional and sometimes diva like, Anita was one of the UK’s most visible and outspoken executives. She didn't always get it right and not everyone approved of her business approach and decisions, but you can't argue that she didn't make a huge impact.

She also had a huge influence on me as I was growing up - starting her business just a few miles from my home town - so I wanted to explore how one woman and an idea rocked the business world.

HOW DO YOU INFLUENCE PEOPLE?

Are you candid, using straightforward and frank communication? Or do you curry favour? I'm a firm believer in candour being one of the key qualities of leadership with integrity. Eschewing this to curry favour is a surefire way to destroy trust - the very foundations upon which business relationships are built.

That's why, in today's article, I share five recommendations for business leaders who want to make candour part of their arsenal and build trust in all their business relationships - not least with customers!

“If you think you can do a thing, or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.”

I love that Henry Ford quote... it goes straight to the heart of our belief in our own ability to make a success of our business. And it’s this limiting self-belief, or lack of confidence, that I see hold back so many perfectly capable business owners and get in the way of their success.
