Why Media matters in healthcare advocacy and education
‘Words are bridges that separate us’, said Mexican writer Octavio Paz.
So, I believe, is the Media: It bridges the distance between messenger and audience, but it hardly eliminates it.
The Media can sometimes widen the chasm, act as a barrier. Then, we in the public health and healthcare advocacy worlds resort to defensiveness and accusations against the Media folks we so desperately need on our side.
Perhaps, as a journalist, I have some bias towards reporters. However, it is from an advocacy communications perspective that I try not to succumb to the impulse of blaming the Media. Studying the news production processes, I believe the onus is on us, as advocates, to present our case in the most Media-friendly manner. Let us think about mental illness and healthcare as framework. Talking about lazy reporters who will not read the 73-page scientific report on the state of mental health care in America will not get us any closer to good coverage, and will alienate those we need as allies, as partners.

Hillary Clinton in the general election if the choices are she and any of the
clowns on the Republican side. I have many, many ...

After Paris: The mocking of dissent and the selling of a failed strategy
By Isabel Manuela Estrada
Portales, Ph.D., M.S. After
the attacks in Paris, the supposed Western world promptly split into two camps:
those who condemn the attacks and those who…what? Defend them? Justify them? At
least that’s how it was portrayed. Perhaps

Ben Carson and the house negro game
By Isabel Manuela Estrada
Portales, Ph.D., M.S. Some
look at Ben Carson, one of the Republican candidates for president, as
showcasing a supine scientific ignorance that should be surprising, given his
great medical acumen. I do not give him the benefit of ...
