APRIL 2016
A volunteer writes:   Handsome Blake was ready for his walk hurrying out the door to go potty.  After using the ‘facilities’ we’re off to the park, Blake pulling slightly on leash but no biggie.  His tail wags as we walk, he wags at people we pass and once in the park poses for photos like a pro.  He’s so good looking people stopped to watch our photo session, and Blake acknowledged them with a smile and gentle wag of his tail.   He sits when asked, takes treats gently and once he knew that treats were an option he’d sit without being asked.  Smart! Blake can be a bit mouthy (no pressure) as we play but stops quickly and is easily managed.   Up on the bench for more pictures, more treats, more smiles and tail wags, and some kisses!  He’s a terrific snuggler, and a lovely companion with whom to sit and watch the world go by.  His playful energy and friendly good nature is ready for a
person or family (older children) with whom to live happily ever after.   Come meet Blake today.
BEHAVIOR :
Blake walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body.  He was calm and relaxed during handling. Blake played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction and was a bit difficult to distract him. He was not interested in toys. Blake rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog; when close, growls.
The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter no children who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 3. Dog is not fearful and is struggling to get away. The dog is not focused and is in constant movement, unconnected to the Assessor.
Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect.
When off leash with other dogs, Blake is initially tense upon interacting.  He approaches, sniffs the rear of the female greeter and begins to whine with a high tail, likely sexually motivated.  When he is unable to mount and the female moves away, he begins to give a low vocal ‘grumbling’.

Needs To See A Vet~ LOKI -Brooklyn -NY  Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED THURS 4/28/16
Once again “personal problems” on the part of an owner means that another pet finds himself in a fight for his life. In Loki’s case he appears to have some medical issues that have been neglected which certainly don’t help his chances for adoption but Loki is trying his hardest to show the world that he is deserving of a chance. Loki needs to see a vet for sure but he has not let anything get in the way of being sociable and friendly to all he has met during his shelter stay. Because of his medical needs, a rescue placement is needed. Loki has been left to suffer at the ACC and now, after all he he has endured the shelter has decided his life is not worth saving and plans to kill him tomorrow. Please work with rescues or email the Help Desk at helpdogs@urgentpodr.org to save Loki tonight. He is hoping for a last minute miracle.

ZINC - Manhattan -NY ~Rescue Only~Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED FRI 4/29/16
A volunteer writes: His tongue is in the shape of a heart!! And this little munchkin is all heart, tail wags and kisses. A chunky little fellow, he’s likely housetrained, his leash manners are lovely, and as we walk he has the cutest habit of touching my hand with his nose from time to time. Talk about heart!! Mine went pitter patter every time he did that! Ignoring a yappy little dog we passed, Zinc and I walk together like two old friends in harmony. In the yard, he jumps up on the bench to snuggle beside me, and I’m impressed with how well he moves for a chunky little fellow. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and Zinc loves to cuddle with his person and give kisses, so he’s not going to let the height of the bench deter him. Zinc loves treats, takes them gently and is still more interested in snuggling than he is playing with toys. In his first playgroup he bounces around the female greeter dog. With love, friendship and charm to spare, Zinc is looking for a lifelong cuddle buddy.

COPPER - Manhattan - NY  Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED FRI 4/29/16
A volunteer writes: Meatball anyone? Dumpling? Call him what you will, but be sure to call him! “The World According to Copper” goes like this: a nice walk so I can show off my great leash manners and go potty, and then l’m ready to chill in your lap, give you some kisses, and let you pet me! And when you find my ‘sweet spot’ my back leg will start going and you can laugh along with me! This little pudgy fellow is beyond beyond adorable — his eyes sparkle, he snuggles, he gets closer and closer, he grins a happy grin as he ends up pressed against my chest on my lap. I didn’t think he could jump up on the bench with his short little legs, and he actually pulls himself up as if he was doing a chin up. So cute, and he does it every time…a pro! Copper met other dogs in group with a loose body and wagging tail, and is tolerant when solicited to play. He’s all about people, though, and whoever has a hand free to pet him is his new bestie. Copper is ready to snuggle up on the couch with you to watch your favorite TV show…Animal Planet anyone? He won my Best Snuggler award and is ready to show you his skills. Come meet him today!

LEO -Brooklyn - NY  Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED THURS 4/28/16
A volunteer writes: Leo is a bit of a mystery man! He arrived as a stray with two other dogs that look like they could be his siblings. Everything about his mouth is cute — the overbite, the floppy lips, the one of a kind smile…everything! He can be a little nervous, but seems very sweet. He softly whines in his cage and will prop his paws up on the door. He seems housebroken, is very easy to handle, “sit”s like a champ and takes treats nicely (though he likes them broken up into small pieces to make things easier on the overbite!). When I squeak a ball he tilts his head and pushes it with his nose when I throw it. He hasn’t been demanding of affection with me, but wags his tail when I talk to him, lets me pet him all over, and seems to take comfort in having company. Mostly Leo seems like a really good boy in a strange place. He’s hoping to find a place to call home…please come see him at Brooklyn ACC!

IVY - Manhattan -NY  Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED THURS  4/28/16 AVERAGE RATED!!
A volunteer writes: A gorgeous slate gray coat wraps her cute little body, and her big ears reach to the sky! Surrendered to our care as her family moved someplace where she’s not welcome, she joins us with a glowing resume of a family dog. Ivy lived with children between the ages of 4-6, likes to be brushed and get baths, doesn’t guard her ‘stuff’, is housetrained when walked regularly, and isn’t bothered by loud noises. Ivy was my first walk of the day and set me up beautifully, as she’s a delight!! After showing off her housetraining skills the moment we were outside, we enjoyed a walk to the park, and Ivy is indeed a good city girl. Noises, kids on skateboards, shopping carts, horns honking — nothing bothered her as her tail wagged as we walked. Stopping for some pictures in the park, she poses like a pro, showed off her ‘sit’, enjoyed her reward treats, and then rewarded me with some kisses!!! Off leash in the yard, Ivy played with some toys, posed for more pictures doing that head tilt thing I just love, and when our time together came to an end, hopped right back into her kennel. Miss Ivy is a fun, friendly affectionate pup looking for a new family to take care of. If you’re lucky, it could be yours!

Owners Moved, but not with LADY BUG -Brooklyn -NY  Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED THURS 4/28/16
When their people moved someplace they couldn’t go, this little family ended up at Brooklyn ACC. No doubt young Lady Bug, young Tramp, and puppy Thor are trying to figure out where their world disappeared to. All in decent health when they got there, Lady But was described as “friendly” when she got there. But to ACC she’s one more young Pitty who’s got to move along and the only plan they have to accomplish that is to put her on tomorrow’s euthanasia list. Tonight, Lady Bug is hoping against hope that someone out there spots her and just knows she’d be a great addition to their household. But unless that someone steps up to foster or adopt her by noon tomorrow, ACC won’t hesitate to add her to the long list of dogs they make gone.

Lived With A Family NOBU - Manhattan -NY  Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED FRI 4/29/16 AVERAGE RATED
A volunteer writes: What a gorgeous, gorgeous former–we hope just for the moment!–family pet. Nobu was surrendered by his family because of personal issues (theirs, not his), and what beautiful owner-surrender notes they left. Nobu lived with a ten year old and played “very gently” with both children and adults, likes to follow his family from room to room, is house trained, and is “super friendly” with strangers. Needless to say, finding himself here has been disorienting for him, but he is doing a mighty job to adjust–he is kind to the other dogs in playgroup, he is kind to the volunteers and kennel officers trying to offer him comfort. But there is only so much we can do for a family dog, given that the shelter is not a place where a loving dog can follow anyone room to room. Please, won’t you come meet Nobu and offer him a forever home? He is in need of leash training or a back yard in which to roam free! Another volunteer writes: So quiet in his kennel, up front gently waiting for his turn for a walk. Leashed easily, we head outside, where his “business” is his first business, and we’re off for a walk. Nobu pulls on his leash a bit, and after a short walk we head into the backyard. He comes when called, joining me on the bench for some hugs and kisses, poses for some pictures, sits side saddle (which melts my heart every time), greeted other dogs passing our pen with bouncy tail wags, and in group play greets politely and solicits soft play. Surrendered to our care as his family no longer had time to care for him, we know that he is “super friendly” with strangers, plays gently with adults and children and lived respectfully with a 10 year old child. He’s housetrained when walked regularly, doesn’t like to be left alone for too long, doesn’t guard his stuff, and is described as “friendly, affectionate and playful”. Nobu has been gorgeously taken care of, his brindle coat shines with good care, he’s calm and quiet and doing his best to adjust to temporary life without a family. He’s looking for a new family to love, and we’re cheering for this sweet boy. Ask to meet him when you visit.

ALEXA - Manhattan - NY Please Share:
TO BE DESTROYED FRI 4/29/16
A volunteer writes: “Like a lady that knows her manners, Alexa actually laid down as she patiently waited for me to open her kennel. That blew my mind! She seemed to have a lot of pent-up energy as she pulled the leash during the first half of our walk. Considering that it’s her first day here I certainly understood that she may have been nervous/frustrated. And as a matter of fact she actually did calm down considerably the last half of our walk. She had a beautiful soft, brindle coat that loves to get petted. She’s outgoing and appears to like other dogs!”
Another volunteer writes: Alexa was so excited to go for her walk. She couldn’t wait for me to put her leash on. She has a beautiful Brindle coat and nice pretty eyes. When we got to the park after a little jog, I sat on the bench. I waited for Alexa to catch her breath, and the she looked at me. That look was so awesome. I knew then that she is smart girl I gave her a little scratch behind her ears and she closed her eyes briefly. It was heaven for me because I knew Alexa will be a happy dog when she gets to her forever home. She does love going for a nice jog.
