If you haven't heard, Google+ is going to be shut down. There was a security bug that sounds like it was quickly fixed once found and they didn't find evidence of misuse of data, but it may have been around for years, 500,000 accounts may have been affected, and the incident went unreported for months.

A while back, I posted about Mouse Books, a new company that's printing pocket-sized, 48-page books of classic literature. Their original Kickstarter was successful, and they're now back with a special holiday/giving themed set of three books for $15. They said delivery by Christmas is guaranteed within the US and "highly likely" internationally. Please check it out on Kickstarter and consider backing within the ~7 days left in the campaign. Thanks!

I wanted to pass along this 1-week Kickstarter for a collection of nice, small, sci-fi, solo, dice-rolling, card-based games called Twin Stars. One game = 1 scenario + 2 characters, and they're all completely interchangeable, offering a lot of variety and replayability. And it's relatively inexpensive: print-and-play is $3, a physical copy is $10, and a physical copy with dice, tokens, etc. is $20. The campaign is already at ~13x its funding goal, so it's pretty popular. If any of this sounds interesting, check it out -- you've only got about 5 days left and there are stretch goals to be met!

Here's a recent Kickstarter that I really like and wanted to share with more people. It's called Mouse Books. They're printing pocket-sized, 48-page books of classic literature. They'll be grouped according to some common theme, with shorter works printed in full and longer works using selected excerpts that can stand alone. A one-year subscription includes four, themed quarterly shipments totaling 12 books (plus bonuses, so you'll probably get more than that) for $50. If you'd prefer to try out one shipment instead, the three books of the first theme (Refusal) are just $15. If this sounds interesting to you, please check it out and consider backing within the ~12 days left in the campaign. Thanks!

Vim users: do any of you who use the airline plugin know why if I try to set symbols in my _vimrc file they won't work, but if I edit the plugin's init.vim file and mimic existing lines to set them they do? This is with Vim 7.4 on Windows 7, and yes, I've checked all the common stuff. The default symbols work just fine, so it's not like the glyphs don't work at all. They do, but I can't set them in my _vimrc for some reason. I don't remember having this problem on the Linux and OS X machines I use at work, so I think it's something Windows-specific, but can't figure out what. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I tried one more thing, and it worked. Looking at the init.vim file, I saw that the symbols were defined like "\u####" where #### is the Unicode number for the symbol/glyph. I was trying to use '*' where * is the actual symbol/glyph itself. For some reason, that doesn't work, but using double quotes and the \u#### notation does. Strange, but at least I know. I'll leave the post up in case anyone else has the same problem -- hopefully they'll find this and it might help them.

I read about the new Note 7 today and while it does bring the microSD card slot back, it doesn't have a removable battery.  Can anyone recommend a similar phone with both expandable memory and a removable battery?  Thanks!

Today is the first National Notebook Day celebration, to occur on the third Thursday of May every year. See, for example, the news item linked here.

If anyone was interested in the reusable cloud-connected Rocketbook but missed the original Indiegogo campaign, here's a a second chance on Kickstarter. It's more than fully funded already, and they claim they're incorporating feedback from users of the first batch, so hopefully they'll be better than the originals.

I found a deal on the Genius Rescue cloud backup service, a lifetime subscription for 2TB of space for $49 (see link). However, when I try to find more information and reviews, there's not much available. Does anyone here use/know it, to provide more details? Despite the price, I'm not sure I want to go for something that has so little information readily available on the web. Thanks!
