Confluence ...again

Another trip to Lyon, another quiet Sunday and some more crappy shots from the Confluence area - this time with a different lens.

A walk at Confluence

Some random, crappy shots from a walk around the half-rehabilitated Confluence area on a quiet, lazy and sunny Sunday afternoon during a recent work trip to Lyon.

I thought the contrast between the modern new office architecture and the crumbling old port buildings was quite interesting. They also managed to cram quite a pleasant little park between a motorway and a railway line!

Tracker, Mark's new album

Mark Knopfler will be releasing yet another new album soon called Tracker.

I'm pretty anxious to see how it turns out because the latest album, Privateering was the 1st Mark album I really didn't like all that much. And that's counting all the way back to 1978 with the first Straits album. I have the impression that, ever since he built his own studio British Grove and records everything there, all his stuff is sounding the same.

The promotional video linked below suggests that Mark is continuing his transformation into an elderly, nostalgic intellectual. But you do sense an interesting mix of new sounds and familiar trademark Mark melodies that might make this album worth a listen (or several) when it's out.

Formula E rocks!

The first ever race in Beijing was a cracking one. The 2nd round in Putrajaya was another thriller.

The tracks, all street courses, look awful on paper but have turned out to be instant classics in real life so far. The cars squirrel over bumps and brush walls. Despite the relatively low power of the cars, the impression of speed comes through nicely on your TV screen.

From onboard, you'll see really busy drivers sawing away at the wheel over the bumps and putting on a load of opposite lock out of the corners with the high torque of the electric motors. You'll even see some crossed-arm action in the hairpins. It goes to show single-seater racing doesn't have to look like a video game.

With a field full of famous and infamous Formula 1 rejects, it's quite easy to familiar with the series and the racing itself is pretty hardcore with lots of drama.

It's not the only series around with good racing but that combined with the real world relevance of electric cars and the refreshing venues and racing format make it really enjoyable.

A fascinating insight into the lifestyle of Bangkok's "elite" and their political views

The frightening this is that, while they are aware of the country's problems and understand the causes extremely well, they still fight to preserve a backward, short-sighted system that ensures their privileges.

Not to sound like a broken record, but VICE produce tons of hardcore, straight-to-the-point documentaries about the craziest places in the world.

The Sound of Ayrton Senna

...still haunts the grandstands of Suzuka since 1989.

Fantastic idea and superb execution. It gave me the shivers down the back and maybe a tear or two.

Get your good headphones out and crank up the volume before you watch this video!

Lyon by Night

A few experimental, long exposure and rickety, cheap tripod-supported shots of Lyon, its bridges and fountains.

As is typical for Lyon, this quiet evening stroll was beautifully punctuated by drunken tourists jumping in the river and homeless people peeing in the fountains.

The Lotus49 in HD

The Lotus 49 is a fantastic-looking car. Up to now, images and videos from the '60s and sims like Grand Prix Legends have given us an idea of how awesome it must have been to drive.

However, this new video of Alexander Rossi around the COTA in Austin, Texas, finally shows the real thing in glorious HD, from a reasonably stable helmet cam and without corny background music: just the oh-so-smooth roar of the Cosworth DFV.

Unfortunately, it also makes painfully clear how hopelessly inadequate Alexander Rossi is at driving the thing.
