In the words of its editors:

"""Our goal is to aggregate and communicate some of the activities on the Git mailing list in a format that the wider tech community can follow and understand. In addition, we'll link to some of the interesting Git-related articles, tools and projects we come across.

This edition covers what happened during the month of March 2015."""

I helped put together this news letter for the #Git mailing list, with contributions from a number of Git developers. It highlights some of the Git development in the recent month, along with a bunch of Git-related news & releases.
Git Rev News: Edition 1 (March 25th, 2015). Welcome to the first edition of Git Rev News, a digest of all things Git, written collaboratively on GitHub by volunteers. The maintainer also mentions how stability mechanisms of the 'master' branch and the maintenance releases work.

Another release to give fixes for a handful bugs to users who are stuck with the maintenance track ;-) This maintenance release contains the following fixes, and other fixes to the documentation. An...

The latest maintenance release is out.

While we advance toward the v1.8.1 release on the 'master' front, fixes to a few bugs have been merged to the maintenance track and v1.8.0.2 has been tagged. The release tarballs are found at: htt...

I (+Junio C Hamano) was told that, unlike a "+Page", "Community" is not meant for announcements from more central people to participants, but is meant as a place for members to interact with each other, exchanging ideas, sharing stories, ...

The upcoming release consists of a finely balanced mix of bug-fixes, usability enhancements and surprising new features.

The final 1.8.0 is scheduled to be tagged on October 21st, 2012, and I'll disappear for a couple of weeks after that, so please help us find the last minute regressions and fix them, if any, in the coming two weeks.

Thanks.
A maintenance release 1.7.12.3 has been tagged with a handful of fixes that have been backported from the primary development branch. On the primary development front, we now have the first release ca...

Will the official Windows version be (as usual) several revisions past the latest one? That's OK - but only till there are no notable incompatilities or differences in the behaviour.

The Git User's Survey 2012 is now up!
[Git is an open source distributed version control system]

Please devote a few minutes of your time to fill out the simple questionnaire; it'll help the Git community understand your needs, what you like about Git (and what you don't), and overall help us improve it.

The survey would be open from 26 September till 15 October 2012

The results will be published to the Git Wiki on the GitSurvey2012 page and discussed on the git mailing list, which will be also announced here.
This survey is anonymous, but all information that the users provide (raw data) will be publicly available on the Git Wiki, at https://git.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/GitSurvey2012, to allow for indepen...

Git 2.0 release candidate 1:

* `push.default` defaults to `simple`
* `git add -u` and `git add -A` operate on whole repository (use `git add -u .` to restrict them to current directory)
* `git add directory/` notices removed paths
This is the first release candidate for the upcoming Git 2.0. There are usual sort of updates and fixes one would expect to see between any two feature releases, but the primary reason why its name begins with "2" (as opposed...

Nobody cares about push.default changing to simple, or the changes in behavior of `git add`. Am I right?

Sure, there are tons of fixes, but no real changes.

We are discussing about the concept of a @{publish} tracking branch, and to reject non-fast-forward merges while running `git pull` by default, so you wouldn't need pull.ff=only, and newbies wouldn't push merges by mistake.

Probably not going to make it to v2.0. Myabe v3.0 will have actual import changes.

Welcome to Google+ Git Community.

Unlike the Google+ Git "Page", which is meant for one-way announcements from Git developers and evangelists to Git users, the "Community" is meant to be a place for Git users to meet other Git users and discuss all things around Git.

I just created "Help Me" and "Stories (success or horror)" subcategories. Other general discussions can go to the default "Discussion" subcategory, for now; we may add more subcategories as necessary.

Enjoy.

What is an "-rc0"?

It is "a more or less feature complete preview of the upcoming release". There may still be a couple to several topics cooking on the 'next' branch that are to be merged before the real feature freeze ("-rc1"), but they are relatively minor that lacking them is not expected to change the overall end user experience too much from the final release.

And the 1.8.0-rc0 is such a preview. I am planning to merge two small features and two fixes later this week when I tag 1.8.0-rc1, but other than these four topics, what has been tagged today is more or less a good preview for the final release (modulo bugs and regressions that will be fixed, if any, before the real thing).

That means that it is very important for the users to test and find regressions in this preview. If you are using Git, please take some time and do your part to help the upcoming release as polished as we could.

Thanks.
I just tagged Git 1.8.0-rc0. Tarballs are found at the usual place. The 1.8.0 is scheduled to appear on Oct 21 and I am planning to disappear for a few weeks after that on vacation. Here are some h...

Introduction
Git is a fast distributed source code management system, and here is a place to learn about its development, first-hand from those who develop Git and those who develop tools that support the wider Git ecosystem.

This Google+ page was created by Gitster, but co-maintained by a few core Git developers (volunteering is very much appreciated; if you are a core Git developer and not a co-maintainer yet, please nudge us).

Please mention +Git when you see a noteworthy post by those who develop Git and tools that support the wider Git ecosystem, and we'll try to reshare it.
