"Bridge in the Rain is a painted copy of a woodcut by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige. All the same, the work has a style of its own. Rather than attempting to imitate the smooth surface of the paper print, Van Gogh used conspicuous brushstrokes. He rendered the water with visible touches, the texture of which clearly reveals that this is paint on canvas. He also chose brighter colours than those in his example.

Van Gogh bought his first Japanese prints in Antwerp, describing them in a letter to Theo as ‘very diverting’. He and his brother began to collect them seriously in Paris, purchasing hundreds of cheap editions from the art dealer Siegfried Bing. Van Gogh was fascinated by the scenes of nature and everyday situations depicted in the prints, but he was also impressed by their composition and style, including large areas of solid colour, pronounced outlines, diagonals and abrupt cropping. He copied several of the prints in his collection to practice applying these elements himself.

Van Gogh painted this work on a standard size canvas. He wanted to maintain the proportions of the original print and so left a border, which he filled with Japanese characters copied at random from other prints."
