Make +ClockworkMod Recovery Backup via adb backup

Make a CWM backup directly to your computer.

Backup
 * boot into recovery
 * adb backup -f boot.img boot
 * adb backup -f system.img system
 * adb backup -f data.img data

Restore
 * boot into recovery
 * adb shell echo -n boot > /tmp/ro.bu.restore
 * adb restore boot.img
 * adb shell echo -n system > /tmp/ro.bu.restore
 * adb restore system.img
 * adb shell echo -n data > /tmp/ro.bu.restore
 * adb restore data.img

The restore usage still kinda messy. I have a couple ideas on how to fix that.

Just checked in this code-- there will be recovery rebuilds later as well.

Carbon -  Encrypted Device Support

Carbon now supports Androids that are using full device encryption (or a desktop backup password for security).

Should be rolling out on Google Play within the next few hours.

Yo CWM! Thought you'd want to know about this. I already purchased Helium Premium, so I didn't have a chance to download or 'test' this pirated copy:

Carbon - The missing App Sync and Backup solution for Android

And it's live! Thanks for all the help beta testing (12000 testers)! There's some new features that I've added since the last beta.

Unfortunately for me, some Android blogs jumped the gun and announced the Play release before I was ready (was still testing the licensing and proguard code), so they've forced my hand. But hey, any press is good press! :) [1]

I'll be giving out a bunch of free codes over the next few days, so pay attention to this stream and you may get lucky :)

Carbon does NOT require root. All Android users can use Carbon to backup and sync Android applications.

Carbon lets you backup your apps and data to your SD card or cloud storage. You can sync app data from your other Android devices-- even if they are not on the same network. Set up backup schedules with Carbon, and never lose data again.

Carbon Setup
1. Install Carbon on Android
  a) Root user? You're done!
2. Install and run Carbon Desktop (link below)
  a) Windows users must install their Android drivers as well
3. Connect Android to computer.
4. Carbon on Android should now be enabled.

Carbon (Free) features:

Backup and restore to SD card
Backup and restore from PC

Carbon (Premium) features:

No ads
Automatic Backup schedules (new feature since the beta!)
Android to Android sync
Cloud backup and restore
  * Dropbox
  * Box
  * Google Drive

Carbon Desktop Installer (non-rooted users):
http://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon

[1] Please note that Carbon 1.0.1.7 had a bug prevents non-root users users from enabling the app via the Desktop. I have already released 1.0.1.8 to fix this. It will be available in the Play Store shortly.

+Wil Wheaton Recovery

Tonight, +Wil Wheaton was trying to root his HTC One and failing miserably. He was able to get recovery installed, but couldn't figure out how to get Superuser installed through recovery (some issue with mounting, blah blah).
https://plus.google.com/108176814619778619437/posts/11MvAVpy98E

Tough bootloaders call for an even tougher tough recovery. I'm proud to announce the new Wil Wheaton Recovery. Wil Wheaton Recovery will offer to root your device if root access is missing.

Will Wheaton Recovery is a limited edition recovery, exclusive to the HTC Ones and Wil Wheatons. Enjoy!

Download Wil Wheaton Recovery and flash it with fastboot:

Then just install my Superuser off Google Play. It will walk you through the rest of the root process.:

Pretty sure +luis zarate is either clueless or a troll, since RM has supported TWRP for quite some time now. Don't care, locking the thread.

If people keep dicking around in the comments, and I will ban them.

Where does one go to provide suggestions and bug reports?  I think I found a small bug when swiping back and forth between backup/restore tabs, and it took me forever to figure out that message restore looks like a separate app (Messaging Storage".)  I was looking everywhere for a checkbox to restore messages (like used in the backup.)

I've backed up another 100 apps to both the cloud and internal storage, however, when I go to restore only about 34 show as being restorable.  What is up with that?

+Koushik Dutta That's a really lame thing to do, but it doesn't surprise me.

A feature you could consider adding in the future is either a whitelist/blacklist for apps that are known to backup and restore properly or a crowd sourced approach like RetailMeNot and BugMeNot where users respond with a 'Yes', 'No' or 'Partially'.
