This Saturday the first of the Easter Day services starts with the service of light at 9pm at St Nicholas church in Arrington where we light the fire with a flint, light the candle from the fire, light the church and the word of God from the candle following a procession from the churchyard into the church.  Don't miss this ancient service that may have started in modern day Italy in the 4th Century.

GOOD FRIDAY
Good Friday maybe a public holiday but spend a minute thinking of all those that are obliged to work on this day to satisfy our consumer needs - it seems a long way from the crucifixion of Christ that this day is about

The services on Good Friday are all benefice focussed so Barrington will be hosting a  meditation at 10am. Orwell will be marking the crucifixion with a vigil at 12noon and Arrington will host a Stations of the Cross at 3pm.

No need to book it's Mothering Sunday.

Yes, this coming Sunday (15th March 2015) is Mothering Sunday aka Mothers Day.  The churches in the Orwell Group that will be celebrating Mothering Sunday will be Barrington at 8.15am, Arrington at 09.30am, Wimpole also at 09.30am (all Eucharists) and Orwell at 11.00 am (All Age service).

Unlike many of the restaurants in the areas you don't need to book - just turn up we will be glad to see you whether you are a regular or a less regular attender at church services or whether you are just curious.

Mothering Sunday is one of the times when we celebrate all women in the Christian story but it is also about mother church. Flowers used to appear on the altar and so now we give flowers to every woman in the congregation and if there are any left over then the men as well.

Mothering Sunday is a traditional Christian day in the church Calendar dating back to the eight century from Laetare Sunday. Mothering Sunday or Mother's Day always occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Want to know more? then come along and you may find out more!

the Lent courses for 2015 start this evening in the Rectory at 7.30pm.
An afternoon session will run on Friday 27th between 2pm and 3.30pm also in the Rectory.

This year we are looking at how as people of God we approach difficult times in the world and in our personal lives.

As usual each session is stand alone so you can drop in at any point in the programme.

The web site has all the programme dates and times on it.

Well the Pancake Party went well and like many parties there was the usual hoard in the kitchen but they were all washing up, cooking and cleaning down.  I counted over 50 hungry mouths in the schoolroom consuming pancakes with a whole variety of exotic toppings apart from the traditional lemon juice.  The event also raised £120 for the Children's Society.
Many thanks to Richard Hine who provided the photos for us including Felicity flipping the first batch - rather enthusiastically I thought.

Why not visit our website where there is a lot more information.  The church in this image is of Arrington during late Autumn.  It is one of the five in the group.  Each church will feature as an image throughout the following months.  Go to "About" and follow the links through to our website.

PANCAKE DAY is nearly on us

Pancakes!  They are traditionally eaten with lemon and sugar on Shrove Tuesday (17th February) but so many people don't know how to make them, or feel they cannot make them, or have just never ever eaten them.  So here in the Orwell Group of parishes we have decided to throw a Pancake Party and at the same time try and raise some money for the 'Children's Society' by people asking people who come along to make a small donation if possible.

We've moved into the Methodist Schoolroom in Orwell (the chapel just down the road from the church) for the party because they have a kitchen and we don't.  So if you just don't want to make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday because you are too busy, or if you can help throw some, or just provide the raw ingredients just  let Felicity know (so we know how many pancakes to cook) and come on along between 6.30pm and 8pm.

Felicity can be contacted on 01223 207212.  We would love to hear from you.
