No matter how much milk you drank when you were little, somewhere between ages 30 and 40, your bone mass will begin to decline. It’s a natural part of aging. However, for people with certain risk factors, bone loss leads to ostopoenia and osteoporosis, conditions that put older people at risk for serious fractures.

Please listen to our latest podcast, as Marin General Hospital endocrinologist Dr. Alexander Uihlein explains the biology of bone loss and what you can do to maintain your bone density. Learn about medical conditions and medications that can cause calcium to leach out of your bones. Expectant mothers - if you are planning on delivering at our Family Birth Center, you might be interested in knowing that July is National Cord Blood Awareness Month...

But, what is Cord Blood and why is it impomrtant? Currently, stem cells are mainly used in the treatment of disease and in tissue regeneration. They largely come from one of three sources – cord blood, bone marrow and peripheral blood. Cord blood stem cells are found in the blood of the umbilical cord. With their instant availability at birth and demonstrated utility, cord blood is quickly becoming a well known source of stem cells by transplant physicians.

After a baby is born, and the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, the blood left in the umbilical cord can be collected and the stem cells extracted and stored for potential use in a future medical application. Today, there are nearly 80 conditions that can be treated with cord blood and experimental treatments using cord blood for cerebral palsy and Type 1 diabetes are underway.

Marin General is proud to facilitate the donation of cord blood from mothers who deliver at our Family Birth Center, if they so choose. This option, along with many others, are presented in our Birth Preferences Plan. For centuries, people have used various types of opioids for pain relief. These powerful drugs are very effective for acute pain from a broken leg, bad burn, or recent surgery. Unfortunately, opioids are often overused, or misused for lesser aches and pains, or abused as recreational drugs. As we have learned from America’s raging opioid crisis, these drugs can be extremely addictive.

Listen, as Dr. Ramanu Naidu, Medical Director of Pain Management at Marin General Hospital talks about pain relief and how opioids work compared to other types of medications used to control pain. Dr. Naidu covers a variety of topics, including the difference between dependency and addiction, and the social, cultural, and hereditary factors that can make people more prone to opioid addiction.
