Le professeur Daniel T. Wise de l'Université McGill est le lauréat 2016 du prix Jeffrey-Williams. M. Wise est généralement reconnu comme l'un des meilleurs théoriciens des groupes géométriques dans le monde, et le meilleur de sa génération. Ses travaux ont des répercussions profondes non seulement en théorie des groupes géométriques, mais aussi en raison de leur rôle clé dans la résolution de problèmes jamais encore résolus en théorie des variétés à 3 dimensions.

Wise is widely recognized as one of the top geometric group theorists in the world, and the best of his generation. His work has had a profound impact, not only in the immediate subject of geometric group theory, but also playing a key role in the solution of outstanding open problems in the theory of 3-manifolds.

McGill University Associate Professor Louigi Addario-Berry is the recipient of the 2016 Coxeter-James Prize for his outstanding contributions to mathematical research. He works on the interface of probability and combinatorics. “Louigi Addario-Berry has emerged as one of the leaders of his generation in the area of discrete probability,” one referee said.

Esteemed mathematician Sir Andrew Wiles (Oxford University) has won the 2016 Abel Prize - awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Wiles became hooked on Fermat’s Last Theorem as a ten-year-old when he read about it in a book called “The Last Problem” by ET Bell at his local library in Cambridge. The theorem is easier to state than to solve. First formulated by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in 1637, it states: “There are no whole number solutions to the equation xn+yn=zn when n is greater than 2.”

His proof of Fermat's Last Theorem made international news.
