One amazing event:
The German-American Frontiers of Engineering Symposium
(#GAFOE co-organized by Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation #AvH and the National Academy of Engineering #NAE)
http://www.humboldt-foundation.de/web/gafoe-2015.html

While this morning we saw how these guys: http://bit.ly/1J7XZGO pick-up and manipulate kinesin (the motor molecules transporting stuff within your body's cells) with light, or these guys: http://bit.ly/1Hc8DgG build nano screws to swim through your eye, we learned just now from Matt Johnson and Helene Felice (both Lawrence Berkeley National Labs) how to build a particle accelerator (or at least the core components...).

I haven't had my mind blown and blown again at such a frequency in a long time! =-o

There I was, thinking we, <the scientists>(tm), were the good guys - and then there's Reseach Gate, your "social networking site for scientists" (apparently found and managed by "scientists"), which doesn't only spam me to death, but even started faking the sender of their spam to be actual colleagues (cmp. Fig 1).
This, I guess, is an impersonation attack - which doesn't seem to be the best way when trying to win someone's trust (or: new customers) to me.
Go figure...

Took the liberty to comment on their profile:

I guess they'll simply blacklist my contact details and keep p*ng off everybody else, but then at least I'll have my peace *sigh

A good reminder:

''' Schneier said. “We’ve built an Internet for surveillance. We’ve decided that advertising, that marketing, that personal information is the currency by which we all buy our Internet, and that fuels what countries can do.” '''

''' “My advertiser is not my friend,” Dwork said. “I don’t want my computer to know my mood. If I’m sad, maybe my advertiser will suggest that I buy something expensive.
“And I don’t want my advertiser to try to keep me sad. What I’m now starting to worry about is not only my advertiser exploiting my emotional state for financial gain, but also manipulating my emotional state for continued financial gain.” '''

I knew Dresden airport was small, but is this the plane to get to Fra?

With +"Tante Ju" (and: yes, I wish it was the plane to Fra!) 8-)

That's the thing about flying as a kid: the only occasion to get sick and still love it :-)
This time we didn't get the chance to fly on it, but I'll simply book as many flights between DRS and Fra as possible, to increase my chances 8-)

Vaccination on balance does not increase health risks, but massively reduces them; whoever tells you differently is fooled by FUD or who has an agenda; getting vaccinated is a duty to protect the old, weak, and allergic.
(since it apparently can't be stated often enough, let's just do it again...)

h/t: gina häußge for the link that explains it really nicely and comprehensible

It's not perfect, but pretty good introduction to the discussion about vaccines.

Germans rather share negative news, and social recommendations are mainstream now - the latest update to our study on sharing behavior in Germany of articles in social networking sites has just been published.

Brief: news covering violence, crime, and pessimism are shared most often, and stories from the site of the tabloid "Bild" are shared more often than from any of the real news papers.

Brief  (in German): http://www.tu-darmstadt.de/vorbeischauen/aktuell/einzelansicht_113408.de.jsp
The slightly more detailed report can be found here: http://www.emarkets.tu-darmstadt.de/forschung/social-network-usage-in-germany-study/

... and a permanent copy is kept for the friends at the three-letter-agencies... ;-) I do agree though that hysteria doesn't help, though (yet satire usually contains a grain of truth ;-o).

matchupbox, the company that bought safebook, is currently running a kickstarter campaign to help funding "tego". Tego is a device that integrates safebook ideas to create an interconnected personal cloud (dropbox substitute with privacy). I backed them, even though the description on kickstarter is a bit confusing. ;-)

TEGO is a little box we designed to give you protection and control of your personal data, as you browse and interact on the Internet.
