Do you dream of being a wine maker?
During harvest, almost everyone is busy in the field or the winery, and you see machinery, vats of harvested grapes, and other items not normally in view in such abundance. You can see some of these things off to the right in this picture. The tasting room building, though, is as beautiful as always, as you walk toward it from the parking lot. This picture was taken in early November

Juvenile Swainson's Hawk performs a perfect flyover.  These young hawks are among my favorite #raptors.  Swainson's are normally quite tolerant of people and the juveniles have some of the most gorgeous plumage of any bird.  The nearby family had been a bit scarce this year and when I have seen them this summer, I didn’t have time to stop.  Today that finally changed and I stopped for a visit.  One of the two siblings gave me a very nice show.  Taken in Thornton, Colorado, USA.

Some of my favorite flowers
I love flowers of all kind - cultivated and wild. I have captured them with my camera from my own gardens, in gardens of others, and in public places. I have put them on blank greeting cards with lots of room for your message.

Botanists suspended from ropes high in the Brazilian forest canopy have discovered for the first time that Blond-crested Woodpeckers feed on nectar beyond the binocular view of ornithologists on the ground.

The beautiful woodpecker pictured here is a female visiting a fruit feeder at the Vale das Taquaras Lodge in Brazil. (Male Blond-crested Woodpeckers have bright red cheek feathers, but the same rock-star crest of yellowish-white.)

http://www.valedastaquaras.com.br/en/

The woodpecker is a regular visitor at fruit feeders. However, the bird’s long, barb- and brush-tipped tongue may also be an efficient tool to take in flower nectar.

The botanists watched Blond-crested Woodpeckers, as expected, pick ants and termites from small branches. They didn’t expect to see the birds regularly ingesting nectar that is too dilute to interest most hummingbirds, dusting their heads and throats with pollen in the process.

The researchers said 10 species of birds, including the woodpecker, appear to be the main pollinators of Spirotheca passifloroides, an endangered tree that blooms in Brazil’s remaining sections of Atlantic forest in winter (May or June through July or August). The botanists were the first scientists to record the woodpeckers feeding from the tree’s red flowers, which have easily accessible nectar.

At lower heights, the woodpeckers also ingested the nectar of Schwartzia brasiliensis, another flowering tree with easily accessible flowers. The cup-like blooms were visited by hummingbirds, perching birds and the Blond-crested Woodpecker.

Reporting in the journal Biota Neotropica, the botanists speculated that other fruit-feeding woodpeckers may be ingesting tree-flower nectar beyond the view of ground observers.

The Blond-crested Woodpecker is found widely throughout Brazil, including a stronghold at the mouth of the Amazon River where sediment settles into islands. The biggest such fluvial island, Marajó, one of the largest river islands in the world.

The seasonally and tidally flooded island the size of Switzerland is a haven for everything from Squirrel Monkeys and the Crab-eating Fox to Capybaras and the Blond-crested Woodpecker (on the island’s southern section).

I believe that the more we watch, photograph, study and enjoy the Blond-crested Woodpecker, the better for the species, all birds, all wildlife and all humans.

Torrent In The Rain

Today's hike along Hayward Lake was cut short due to monsoons.  In a moment of clear skies and superior planning I packed the first-aid kit, bear repellant and a shell good enough to fend off a light sprinkle.

Just a few days of rain has pumped up volumes in local rivers to Spring levels as seen here at  Steelhead Falls ...which I visited at the beginning; before I was soaked to the bone.

One of the things that I love about this time of year is watching the clouds accumulating over the mountains. These mountains are the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains that border Tucson Arizona USA on the north and east sides.

Introduction

I have lived in and loved California my entire life and now reside on its beautiful Central Coast. The longer I live in San Luis Obispo’s North County, the more contented I become here. Most of my waking hours when I'm  not occupied with chores,  you will find me blogging, reading, walking around with my camera in hand, tending my garden, or dabbling in the local art scene. I hate shopping, and do it only if we will starve if I don't.

I've been married to the same man for over fifty years and we have loved and been bereaved of two adopted children.
