Be sure your children know to leave these plants alone before they walk or hike  in North County parks or on wild trails
We like to think of our parks as safe places, and, for the most part, they are. But Larry Moore Park is full of poison, especially from February until the end of summer. It's not only poison, but it's lovely poison. You can s...

There's a park and trail near my home that's so full of toxic plants it could almost have been planned that way. Thanks for sharing yours.

That is very scary. I will pray for God's protection of your family. I camped at Clear Lake about 25 years ago with my son, and I'm  sorry to  hear what this fire is doing to the area and its residents.

Why bring an iPod when you have singing birds?
Today I explored a new walking path in Paso Robles that was part of a residential development. If I had to give that walk a theme, it would be birds. Birdsong accompanied me wherever I walked, and birds were flying almost eve...

What is this about birds and wires or cables?
Those who have walked facing south in the bed of the dry Salinas River have probably seen this pipeline bridge that begins on the end of Oak Lane. I happened to catch this bird perched on a cable that was helping to anchor th...

The drought at Atascadero Lake
Everyone probably knows that California has been in a #drought for at least a year. Our rainy season just didn’t happen here in San Luis Obispo County this year. There has been no water in the Salinas River as it runs through Paso Robles this year. We’re pretty used to seeing the river dry. But I’m not used to seeing #Atascadero #Lake dry.  The introductory photo was taken on January 15, 2012, when the lake was at normal depth and full of waterf...

Urban and rural parts of Paso Robles are often very close together.
Would you believe the scene in this photo is within a five minute walk of a busy shopping complex? The corner of Niblick Road and Creston Road holds a shopping center anchored by Food 4 Less, a pet store, and a constantly cha...

Fragrant flowering trees enhance any yard.
This is the season here when trees are flowering. You have already seen the almond trees in bloom, but the almond is only one of the many that are flowering here now. There is also this gorgeous tree with deep pink flowers. T...

This flower is a consistent bloomer for me.
Of all the plants in my gardens, calendula, also known as pot marigold, is the most reliable and easy to grow. Its cheerful yellow hues can be seen during most seasons of the year on the California Central Coast. Its edible flowers add beauty to...

Can you recognize poison oak during any season?
Before you head into the woods, or even your own property to hike or to clear brush, be sure you can identify poison oak so you can save yourself from a nasty rash and lots of misery. Even some experience woodsmen have been fooled. Join me on my video walks and study the provided photos to learn to recognize poison oak in all its forms through every season. Prevention is the best cure.

Too often the Salinas River is dry.
I live very close to the Salinas River as it flows through Paso Robles -- if and when it does flow. As you can see in this picture, there is no water in it now. That is its condition through most of the year. We didn't see an...

Introduction

I have lived in and loved California my entire life and now reside on its beautiful Central Coast. The longer I live in San Luis Obispo’s North County, the more contented I become here. Most of my waking hours when I'm  not occupied with chores,  you will find me blogging, reading, walking around with my camera in hand, tending my garden, or dabbling in the local art scene. I hate shopping, and do it only if we will starve if I don't.

Bragging rights
I've been married to the same man for over fifty years and we have loved and been bereaved of two adopted children.
