I think I found the best gluten free baguette in the world... in my home town of Quebec City!
If you live in Quebec City (or if you are visiting) and you need to eat gluten free, you are in luck! You are just minutes from the Happiness-filling moment of eating a real baguette. If you are not here with us, hop on a bik...

I just added a new post on my blog "La capitale sans gluten" with a map of my favorite gluten-free food shopping spots in Quebec city. There is no way you can starve in Quebec City, and you can drink the best GF beer in the world too!

Trying to analyse data that was entered in an excel file formatted by an undergraduate student (even a great one) is like trying to kill a tiger with a spoon. I vow to add a lab session devoted to creating efficient datafiles (NOT in excel, ready for R) in my second year physiology class, starting  next fall.

On the interest of flipping university classrooms. Why not give us small groups instead? What can I teach to 80 students at a time?
If you are in college, I don’t mean to alarm you—but you are probably being experimented on. Stop checking for both of your kidneys; it’s not that kind of experiment. But chances are, one or more of you courses is currently being administered upside down, or “flipped.” Everything is backward:...

The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour is holding its winter conference next week (december 5 and 6 2013). The theme is "THE EVOLUTION OF BEHAVIOURAL MECHANISMS" and two members of our lab (Cecilia Wikström & Claudia Kasper ) will be presenting their exciting results on the proximal molecular causes of social behaviour variation in African cichlids! The plenaries are awesome (Melanie Bateson, Marlene Zuk, etc) and the meeting is free!

Wonderful post about supporting women in science over at Tenure she wrote. It is a good read for women in STEM and men that are looking for ways to support their presence in their field. One of the ideas of things to do is to attend and organize "women in science" workshops at scientific meetings. I am happy to be part of the Committee that organizes the Symposium for Women Entering Ecology and Evolution Today (SWEEET, http://sweeetecoevo.weebly.com/), which takes place during the annual meeting of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution (in Montreal, Canada in 2014!)  #womeninscience   #STEM   #SWEEET

#glutenfree   #quebeccity   #Quebec

A great session at the SEB meeting in Manchester in July 2014
Impact of animal aggression and dominance on neurobiology and stress

Dates: 3rd July (all day)
Organised by: Peter Hubbard (University of Algarve) and Lynne Sneddon (University of Liverpool)

Confirmed Speakers: Rui F. Oliveira (ISPA), Svante Winberg (Uppsala University), Michael Taborsky (Universität Bern), Oyvind Overli (Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB)), Erik Hoglund (Technical University of Denmark)

Animals use aggression to obtain valuable resources, defend territories and maintain their dominance status within a hierarchy. Position or rank affects access to food and mates and the dominant or winner of contests is in the best physiological condition. This influences their metabolic rate, stress responsiveness and the manner in which their neurophysiological systems function. These wide reaching consequences, therefore, influence any behavioural and physiological responses to subsequent challenges and results in high individual variation within group held animals. This session shall address the proximate causes and ultimate functions of animal aggression and tease apart the link between social status and stress coping style. Many researchers are investigating the relationship between physiological phenotype and behavioural performance, therefore, this integrative session shall combine the fields of animal behaviour, endocrinology and neurobiology.

Introduction
I am at the Institute of Integrative and Systems Biology of Laval University. In my laboratory, we study the mechanisms of behaviour variation, using threespine sticklebacks and other fish species as model systems. I am also interested in world and local politics, interior design, electronic gadgets. I also write a blog about enjoying (a gluten free) life in the beautiful national capital.

------------------------------------------------------------
