I've shopped at Metcalfe's on and off for years - it is definitely one of Madison's most expensive grocery stores - I would say more expensive than Whole Foods on many items. The reason I am giving it 2 stars is because I recently ordered groceries to be delivered after having a baby and was very disappointed with the produce that was delivered. I paid $11 for a normal sized carton of organic strawberries and half of them had mold on them, the other half were all old. My salad also expired 2 days from the day it was delivered and was disgusting. I would have driven to the store and demanded a refund on these and other produce items that were all going bad...had I not been stuck at home with a newborn. Summary --- do not order produce to be delivered from this grocer!

hot food bar, sushi, bakery, gluten free options, great produce, a bit over priced. Better than going to whole foods though

I like Metcalfes -- but i feel like it's pretty expensive for what it is. The positives: AWESOME produce; amazing selection of beer/wine/liquor; they have Babcock Hall Ice Cream; and the location is really nice. The negatives: parking is awful (the parking lot is poorly designed, IMHO, and there aren't enough spaces); the awesome produce is waaaay overpriced, and the classical music makes the experience oddly stressful -- give me good old fashioned muzak or even contemporary bland adult-rock any day. i moved to chicago recently so have not been to metcalfes in a while, but when i lived in madison, it was a place my husband and i visited regularly -- although it was NOT our primary grocery store. It's good for fancy stuff and nice beer, but pricy for day to day stuff.

Best meat and produce in Madison. Never have to wait in line to check out. Selection of products is outstanding!

Great selection and produce... if that doesn't keep you, try the seafood and butcher shops.

Metcalfe's is my favorite grocery store around. The quality of the food is higher than most other grocery stores around. We sometimes try a different store for a change, but we eventually come back to Sentry because the quality of the food is better, particularly the fruits and vegetables. The fish is very good as well. Plus, it's a very convenient store. It isn't as huge as other stores and all of the parking is very close. Also the atmosphere is nice. The only downside is that it is a little more expensive and can be crowded on weekends. I keep coming back.

Special ordered two sugar-free apple pies for a birthday celebration almost a week before we needed them. The day of the celebration called to pick them up and were told they didn't have them. Rhonda, the manager said whoever took the order "misfiled" the order and they never received it. When I asked her that the order was lost, she denied it. She apologized but that really didn't help us. She never even asked in what way she could compensate us for their mistake. Terrible customer service. I'd recommend you don't use them if you want anything special ordered. They don't seem to care about it. We've been very good customers of this store and now will go somewhere else since they really don't care about customer service. There are many other great grocery stores to shop. Don't waste your time on this one.
